I am wondering roughly how many percent of all the music you have and use for your sets is actually paid for?

Let me start, I had about 80% that I paid for, at times with discount but paid, most of the rest were promos (free) and here and there I actually used what friends gave me, but only if I really could not find it anywhere else.

around 95 - 97% of the music I play is paid for. Either purchased CD's or Beatport.

95% percent
sometimes someone sends me something via scype which was bought original too. sometimes i dl a dj-mix or listen to webradio. i do not count unreleased material here, because thats a more different thing (often not finished or mastered)

last week a new compilation was exclusively released on beatport where we did the mastering, 4 days later google was FULL of rapidshare-blogs. pages over pages. this is so sick.
i cannot understand what makes people hurt paying only 10-20 EUR the month for their music.
nuff said.

Who the heck pays only $10-20 EUR per month? Do people get only one album per month?

I have something like 150 albums in my psytrance directory, some of which I bought but tbh most of them I downloaded. I do plan on paying for them eventually.

if I had bought all of them on CD it would have cost me, in total, $3000-4000 or so, which is a ridiculous amount of money for me to be paying towards anything when I am still $3000 in debt after 2 years and make less than $700 per month

I am much less likely to pirate an album if it is available on beatport, because it's silly for me to waste all of that petroleum and human labor to get a physical disk all the way to california from europe or japan or whever it is when I can transport all of the information on the disk over the internet for practically no cost.

I exactly pay 10-20 EUR the month for downloads on beatport.
Since we are a dj team we have a budget of 20-40 EUR the month. After just 3-4 monthes you allready got a huge list which allow you to play 4 hours without repeating easily.
I dont know what other people pay for their music. But I know its not expensive - even using it professionally.
What makes it expensive is buying an album/VA but just using 1-2 tracks of it. i love beatport because you can exactly pick your own "VA"-compilation each month.
and honestly: Its tough to find 20 tracks i realy like every 30 days. there have been monthes where I dont buy anything, because there is just nothing to waste money for . then i spare the cash, because sometimes the next month offers around 30 must-have releases.

Very true Kitnam, it has become harder and harder to find music I like, if I am lucky I get 1 decent track per album, no more...           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

100% of my music is paid.

But I rarely buy anything from the psy scene anymore as there are rarely any releases worth buying.

I generally buy a new release from Dakini Records now a days and that's as close as I come to psy trance.

I prefer to listen to my classical music or heavy metal as I find I generally get minimum 95% good tracks per cd, and they work out cheaper to buy than psy (yes even online).

Thinks I'm oving out of the psy scene rather quickly... I think I've gone to one gig in the last 2 years and this year haven't listened to anything in the scene at all except Dakini stuff... but I'll most likely grab the next Noise Poison release.           I hate you, you hate me, we are all so hap hap happy!

This topic has been interestingly quiet for the amount of views...

Probably 25% of my collection is purchased music. Partly due to spending money throwing parties. Partly due to spending money on music production equipment/software. Partly due to me already djing before I listened to psytrance so I didn't even know where or what to buy when I started playing it.

I give myself leeway cause I've contributed to artists through booking fees and the exposure playing at parties gives them

well since i know personly allready 80% of my favorite artists and labels and working close with them , and concider even in dj set (when i dont play live in same event) its still 50% my own stuff..
also i get lots of demo tracks for the label and sometimes thats pure gold , as well getting some for isratrance reviews..
i would say close to 10% paid for but 100% leagal
when i was only dj'ing i was buying ALL i could get without credit card and internet.. so it was everything from artists and whats coming to the shops.. else would download.. concider shop aint getting all i want so it was about 50-50.
outolintu sure can remember i got 2 cds of him , and that it was only cause he agree to accept direct payment. this way rox and connect listener so much more with the artist
for more example - tom cosm give music only personly and from his site , no where else no labels no nothing and working more then most artists.. real guru for underground musicians that want to make some money in the new age (electrypnose and some more on the right way too - my own site coming soon)          www.sattelbattle.com
