I never figured out or had the patience to find and use illegal download sites.

I buy bits online cos I don't need a cd case and don't like waiting days and weeks for the mail.

98% of the music is paid for. 2% is for music from friends that I know is illegally downloaded and I can't pay the artist directly. (example a compilation from 1999 of mostly artists not around anymore).

It comes down to appreciation.
I'm so picky about music, when I find an artist I like, I'm going to find a way to pay him to show my appreciation.
Good music is worth it. And that's the only kind of music I care to have.

all tracks i use for mixing is paid for, and all is cd,i dont like the idea to pay for a file, i prefer to pay for something i can touch, then i send the tracks to my computer           ``We shall not cease from exploration - And the end of all our exploring - Will be to arrive where we started - And know the place for the first time.``

My percentage of music that I've paid for is low. I'd say less than 10% and that's being generous.

The reasons for this are because...

1.) I get a lot of music sent to me by artists as I know quite a few artists personally and we tend to do a lot of "music trading".

2.) I write promo reviews for quite a few record labels, thus, the labels often send me their unreleased material for me to write up promos, or get me in touch with artists directly for the purposes of writing promos/interviews/etc.

That being said, most of the music I have is not music that fits my own personal tastes and/or not something I'd use in a "DJ" setting. I also have a lot of downtempo acquired the same way. Most of that I enjoy listening to, but again, I'm not much of a downtempo DJ so it's not stuff I'd play at an event, either.

Music for djing?? 95% has been purchased online, the rest are bootlegs.

For listening 50%, since there is a lot of stuff I cant find on legit stores or I simpkly want to listen once or twice to know hwat it sound like.           "The dedication to repetition — the search for nirvana in a single held tone or an endlessly cycling rhythm — is one of electronic music's noblest gestures."

90% of my music is purchased, the other 10% of music are tracks that the artists send me for mixes

Also when you paid, you tend to have better music, because of the selection process on beatport.

Also a buudget limit really helps in constructing a superb collection.           "The dedication to repetition — the search for nirvana in a single held tone or an endlessly cycling rhythm — is one of electronic music's noblest gestures."

100%

I have a lot of albums in MP3 I listen to at home or in my car, usually before deciding whether or not to buy it.

Currently on my hard drive, I'd say 80% are WAV CD Rips.

Everything I play though, I've paid for (or been given directly from the artist/label)

I also expect that from every DJ that takes themselves seriously. It is NOT hard to mix Psy Trance, what should set you apart from other DJs is your music collection and selection thereof.

Only a small percentage, but I still have a huge ammount of originals because I have been collecting for 17 years.
Usually I only buy an album if I have listened to it and know it is something I want to dj (non professionally), collect or review in which case I will always buy the release. Its rewarding to have something you can look at after a few years that still gives you pleasure and a sense of pride of owning the original.

Music that I use on my dj sets are paid for....all other psy/non psy stuff are illegal downloads because I can't afford to spend that much on buying all good music being released every month over different genres....

It used to be that teh only music I had was paid for if I didnt make it myself, but lately Ive been scouring the internet for netreleases, there is TONNNNNNNNNS of wonderful music freely available, and sometimes even in 24bit lossless format. So now I'd say that 80% of my music is paid for, the other 20% are digital netreleases. I prefer not to download illegal stuff, too often its badly encoded and sounds like shit, and it shows a lack of respect for the artist, saying 'your art isn't worth paying for'. I won't say Ive never downloaded or will never download, but if I do, its because Im interested in a release and want a good listen before deciding to spend money (which I dont have much of these days) on. I used to have disposable income to throw away on potentially crappy releases (and I did) but now its a question of diapers for the kid, food, or music...           .
