Yes, topic says it all.

I got curious, due to Basilisk, who is at the moment messing about with the molecules in his entire music collecting (I think).

So, how do you organize your stuff ?

I organize my cds into

"Progressive"
"Full On"
"Tech Trance"
"Psychedelic"
"Goa"
"Chillout"
"Other <- Black Metal, Ritual Drumming and Aerobic soundtracks!!!"

I used to have my vinyl sorted after label, but after moving it around a lot its all a mess, usually never fiddle around with it unless Im drunk or something anyways.

Released and Unreleased....hehe kidding

Well its basically morning and dark. Most things do fit into either category. Not much of a twilight listener

it really helps when u want to listen a particular style.
you don need to find much for that if it's properly arranged....            Truth will always guard our souls......

@Krell & trip_on_acid:

- Suppose a release contains 2cds, 1st full-on and 2nd chill-out. What do you do? separate the two cds, the first in your full-on folder and the second in the chill-out folder?

@Krell only:

For me most of Goa is psychedelic too, so, when a Goa release is psychedelic (80%), where do you put the release? in psychedelic folder or goa folder?

--

What do I do:

Organise releases by years:

- 1989-92
- 1993
- 1994
- ...
- 2000
- ...
- 2007

and into each year, I have albums, LP's, and compilations (VA's).

So for example: the release Hallucinogen - Twisted is in the albums folder of 1995 folder.

well if it has 2 cd's and two different genres i would still love to keep them in proper folders of proper genres...
i would not mind seprating the cd's coz ultimately it's the music wat matters to me
that will be easy for me.
and hey i also organise music by year
i make main folder of the year and subfolders of different genres in that main folder....

i organize my cd's by categories as follows:

1. Psytrance
2. Chill-Out
3. All other non-psy electronic stuff
4. Pop/Rock
5. Classical

within every category, the cd's are divided in artist albums/compilations. and they are sorted alphabetically!

i dont divide those categories into subgenres. no use for me, because i don't think in genres that much. so in the Psytrance row on my shelf there is all from prog, psy, goa, fullon....in all other electronics row there's various stuff like Trentemoller, Faithless, Goldie....and in pop/rock you might find stuff ranging from Coldplay to Cannibal Corpse!

for my mp3's i have 3 folders: Electronica, 6-String, Trumpets & Trombones (classical music that is . i dont have as much mp3's as i do have cd's, so a finetuned categorizing isn't needed there.

My collection is chaos really. I've got more than 400 cd's all in all (rough guess) and not all of it is psytrance (about 70% I guess) and I've become tiresome of organizing it orderly. It's all in cases and on shelves but that's about as orderly as I get. I do keep a database however with all of my cd's, dvd's, programs, games etc. etc. but order in putting them away? Nope.           "Subconscious unravels at the point of death, and all time it has known erupts into a moment. As death extinguishes us, so we become it."

In my CD-case I have it roughly sorted with progressive/electro/tech house and progressive psytrance all together in the beginning of the case, and full on/psytrance in the end. These 2 main categories are again sorted by releasedate.           DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

I only collect CDs (don't download..).

Artist albums are sorted alphabetical by artist name...

Compilations are sorted by label (alphabetical)...

If I didn't have this system, I wouldn't have been able to find the ones I want to listen to (fast).

And here comes the bragging... My CD collection:

Now counting: 2212

Now why the fuck the moderators don't delete this thread that ppl talk about how they put their MP3 and stupid trader unreleases downloads on their hard drive? i really doubt they have separated stands of original cds with large stickers on it that says "full on" "dark" "prog" "chill out". Fucking scandalous.

What goes into "Psychedelic" is a matter of how many organic bleep, squeek and bloob sounds the tracks have mainly. It will contain stuff from Ect, Koxbox - but also dark psy and suomi style.
It can be diffucult, with some goa trance, to decide where to put it, but if it has really substandard production, I will usually just keep it in my goa bunch.

In regards to split releases trance+chill, there are some, I categorize them into their trance genre, but I can usually remember which releases contain the extra chill CD.
