Okay you know all that "no rules" and "beleive your ears", however. I know that many of you think that you have to hi-pass all the sounds except kick and bass, to leave the room for kick and bass, to make make the mix more transparent, to avoid mud in low-freq area etc. etc.
Okay, bass and kick are good and important, for sure, but it doesn't meen that they have monopoly to those low frequencies. And sometimes, with care, it may be very cool to add some smashing fat sounds, that will interfere with your kick and bass, and if hi-passed, the mix would soudn thin (at least not so fat as it could). So, once again, no rules and beleive your ears and feelings, good luck in making music

It all starts and ends (imho) by knowing (or at least having some sort of idea) where you wanna go to rather than just throwing hp filter on every channel (btw, you might want to hp your kick and bass too sometime if it fits the concept of what you wanna get).
Peace and luuuv. |

In one track I had a HUGE bass tone sweep up through the frequencies and totally destroyed the low frequency clarity. Bit of compression sorted out the additive effect
Sounded great (I thought) |

I tend to let some fx retain their full tonal spectrum, without any eq's and must say I like it to sometimes get a bassy subthing in there, that does not necessarily cancel the bass and kick out, especially if they are both highpassed at around 70hz or so (kick a bit less) or even more, so you get a subfrequency from an fx that does not interfere. Cool!

i only really realised this recently - after listening to DJs playing after my set and wondering 'why don't my sounds have that presence & fullness on a big system?'
i had fallen into a trap of hipassing everything, almost as default... and without really listening. there was this huge hollow hole in the lower-mids of my music lol |

yes its indeed a trap. it will make your mix thin and nasal if there is too much highpassing. |

Spectrum analyzer is always a good friend
Some sounds expire on maybe... 500Hz and back in 0-80Hz (what ear dont hear in mix).
I think in that situation hipass is necceseary.
I use often HP on freqs below 80-125Hz. I think its not bad.
After that I can make louder track without using a killing limiter

have 'thin lead' and 'fat lead'
this helped me realise only thin leads is shite
fat lead needs the 200hz for sure
even more
some sounds i cut around 12ohz otherwise the hole beauty is gone.
be carefull from harsh subs that can suck the life out of kick and bass but this happen when not hipass anything as beginer usualy no need to worry too much once u got the idea |

I always cut everything below 30-40Hz, other then that it depends on the track .. |

This thread was started way too vaguely... There is a HUGE difference between hp'ing everything at various frequencies. As mentioned above: you can't do much wrong by hp'ing at like 20-30hz. I always hp at -90dB everything except kick and bass below 30hz. You just can't tell the difference in each sound but you can hear the room you gained for your kick/bass. Above (in the more audible range): indeed hp with care.
