hey guys, i have to set up a studio for a friend of mine, he want to spend about 3000-4000€.

he needs:

computer,
interface (good preamps),
2 widescreens,
and a master-keyboard.
he alrdy has got monitors, microphones & guitars.

i though about

~1000€ for the computer
~1200€ for RME fireface 800
~600€ 2x widescreens
~500€ masterkeyboard (usb 88 keys) any suggestion?
~300€ mackie big knob

running with cubase, win 7 64bit.

he is a writer/composer and not aiming for the perfect sound, it should be a easy/fast workflow setup. (no routing hassle etc).

his written songs alrdy sold more then 1.000.000 times back in the 90īs.

he want some fresh stuff, and the cpu shouldnt crash with only 2 instances of battery 3 like it is at the moment lol

i also thought of a DSP card but since he is not aiming for such high quality its more like a waste to me.

any suggestions or alternative hardware?

cheers

600 for 2 screens? That seems like alot!

How about going for a mac if he doesnt want too much crap to be able to have a nice workflow?          soundcloud.com/supergroover

right, 600€ for the screens is to much... but not important.

he alrdy owns cubase, windows and alot of vsts, and is happy with it.

@vipal
thanks for the suggestion, it looks nice. i will think about it.

what about the interface?
he want to record singers and guitars.
1000€ akg microphones are present, is the RME fireface 800 a adequate device? what about the quality and workflow of this thing?

any suggestion on a masterkeyboard?

thanks guys for the help!           www.soundcloud.com/orgytime

how much input/ outputs he need? midi needed? i would suggest he try steinberg mr816 to see if it s stable on his computer , rme sound is a bit cold/steril imo preamp and convertion. mr 816 have better convertion and preamps and cost half the price , rme have best drivers.

i would never spend that much on a rme fireface 800 , better save and get the rme ufx! best bang for the buck is the mr816 , imo try this one first

It wasn't meant so serious with the software.

A (bit more expensive) alternative for the RME Fireface 800 could be the Metric Halo 2882. But I'm sure that one would be adequate for a 1000€ mic.

yeah but the 2882 have only 25 db of usable gain in his preamp, it s good to track loud source only so i wouldn t recomend it for someone that dont have more preamps

Yes, but I don't see there a big problem unless he intends to record e.g. a concert with audio signals coming far away from the mics. Signals close to the mic should be no problem. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Ah, and afaik it's Mac only.

orgie i was reading your first post again and if he dont need perfect sound, rme have the avantage of great drivers and latency, maybe a ff400 would be enought? cause that much for a ff800 when some interface cost way less and sound in same league (like echo)if not better (like mr816)it hurts to pay double price for drivers and maybe a bit more stability (that is a lot depend on your firwire connection ,choose one that is recomended for the interface he gonna buy !).

thanks! very usefull info!

@PoM
he needs 4 microphone and 4 guitar inputs.
so a ff400 would not be enough.
sadly echo dont support more than 2 mic inputs in any interface.

the MR816 CSX looks awesome.
i like that the inputs are on the backside of the device, so the cables wont disturb (because the mics will be always connected to the interface)
on the other hand, he wouldnt touch the interface anyway becaus he controlls it with software.
also the live reverb for the singer without latency is awesome.
the problem i see with this, that its more complicate and i wanted to keep it simple for him. (software, additional funktions...)

i have to talk back to my friend (ff800 vs MR816 CSX).

another question is if the MR816 CSX would work with a air version of cubase, just for curiosity

cheers

no reason it dont work and with cubase it have unbeatable integration

but don t look for the csx this one same preamp and converteurs wihtout the plugins dsp fx
http://www.thomann.de/fr/steinberg_mr816_x.htm

imo go for a store that have both with a return policy like thomann, try mr 816 first, if you are happy stick with it, sound is better .
dont forget check compatibilty with firewire chipset when you build the computer

thanks again!

but especially the csx features are usefull.
my friend told me, he want to put a reverb
on the singers voice during recording. the singer will get
confused when the reverb is delayed a few ms.
but not with the csx version.

the quesition is, if this feature is worth 300€.
because the other stuff will not be used (copressor...).

yeah it will be thomann. you say the sound is better
on the standard mr816? why?

a standard firewire 400 input is not ok? do i need a special one?

cheers
