One of the things I do for leads is to have the lead be very similar to the bassline.... But I do a few other things to the pattern. For some parts I'll use 32nd notes or have one of the notes extend an extra 16th note or something like that...           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

My advice- go learn some scales.
you can take lessons,
you can try to play some of other people's melodys
and then try to learm how they're built (regarding to the main note-the bass).
after all, he who deals with music has to know...

One easy thing to do I see many artists doing, especially in full on is make a simple slow melody and then fill in the gaps with 1/16th or 1/8th notes that are the same with or complement the bass line so that it will be faster.

Yes, this is exactly the thing you want to do if you want your tracks to sound like formula dancefloor stuff and not like music. Please, please, please stop working like this. This is one of the best ways to make your music not psychedelic and not interesting.

Bullsh*t. Trip- got it right - if it sounds good, then there's a theory that it follows. A few hundred years of creating musical theories in the western world pretty much covered it all.

Do you know people who say "all psytrance sounds the same to me"? This is one of the reasons why.

You want some honest advice? You don't need to know anything about musical theory. Just do what sounds good. Build your percussion around the leads and not vice versa and then you'll see that even leads that sound like shit with a standard full-on bassline/percussion combination can suddenly be groovy and extremely energetic (examples: tracks by GBU, Hallucinogen, Saiko Pod, Prometheus, Infected Mushroom, the Antidote and so on).

Start out with making leads and a kick, only then adding a bassline to fit with the lead, and only after that start adding your percussion. Make everything make the lead sound better, work by the lead's rhythm... and all of a sudden your track is as funky as it gets.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

Extending from this idea, if we design a song to have one purpose, one drop, where the lead explodes out from, then it will sound even better.

Also don't forget the power of silence - before there can be a great sounding lead we have to build room for it.
