I think the best thing about being a dj of any style, is just play what you like how you want it...

or else - who's gonna be special?
who's gonna remember this or that person next time?

Playing chillout is mostly fun - because you enjoy the music yourself - even though you don't see 3000 ppl jumping around.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

PsyK !!

It is HAPPY as possible the world of Chill Out is not filled only by Sphongle and Ott (even if i like their music a LOT)

There are many many sweet things to be played, you just have to feel free and not stick to chill "standarts" ...

Imho the "best" (even if this word shouldn't exist in Chill Out) Deejay would be the one who plays me tracks that I've had never hear before...

Of course !!! I don't mean unreleased stuff...

There are so many good things on proper records one CAN'T know everything...

So I would dig a lot a guy/girl who "shows me", u know, who "tells me" : "this is good music in my opinion"...

I would be so thanksful

Freedom is the keyword, that is the first thing to know !

Well... Why not
But then watch out the crowd and get hold of their feeling in their face !!

If they are starring at you like : or worse or even worse

..Then fade out the track and launch something else deceving that it was only an intro !

It's a sport you know !

@psk ..... good post !!!
i'm from Mumbai and i would love to see some chill out in the indian scene
as for the chill djing bit.... i know this sounds cliched but go with the flow of the crowd .... some times even some upbeat ( not full power trance ) stuff goes down well in chill out rooms.... this is just from personal experiance at parties and festivals that i have been to
i don think that the djs really plan their sets .... i;m sure they have some must play tracks but other than that just judge the crowd and most importantly play what u love ....
hope to see a chill scene in India soon....

Hello! I think that in chillout you can play many kinds of music, if it's good music. Even more simple, popular song can easily be put into mix if they're really special in a way and some real kickass tracks precede them (so most of the crowd is already entirely satisfied), and you could add some twist to those tracks by playing another track (atmospheric, ambient, track with lots of fx or vocal samples) in the background etc. The fun part in mixing chillout is that you can just pour sounds into your magic couldron and be always surprised about the results, how smoothly those two songs were blended to each other, and how fascinating it is to play melodies and vocals from this track over the beats of that track etc.. Lots is possible with proper mixer and cd-equipment.

And it doesn't have to be downtempo/ambient all the time. I sometimes play smooth breakbeat, nuskool clubby style, like Abakus: Indu (Shiloh rmx) or Taylor & Meehan: Between the Lines (Greed breaks mix).
Sometimes if the crowd is very energetic, I could even play progressive house tunes such as Flash Brothers: Release Time or Nugen: Darksides (Thomas Penton rmx)... It's all up to you what you want to play and how do you deliver it to the audience. You should always remain open and sensitive and tune into the shared experience of the audience (which is quite easy for me as a healer) so you can sense which songs are liked and which not (maybe they were out of place?). And don't give up you taste and vision for other people's opinions. That's my advice, all the best for you!           http://musicandhappylife.blogspot.com/

this is some really bad response iam gettin here.....

but anyways one question i wanna ask is...........do i need to always play only new stuff or will old stuff also do (by old i mean stuff from 2001 or maybe the 90ies) ..... for a psy trance dj its mandatory to play new killers .... hope its not the same for chill ......

peace.....thanks in advance.......

Psyk

I'm not sure what sorty of response you were after - there is no Govt Ministry of Chill that you have to pass an entrance exam to play chill out! The great thing about chillout is that it is still relatively free form and nowhere near as generic as main trance areas.

So you can play whatever you like - the only measure is whether those who are chilling out there like it or not!

If you are after recomendations of good new (or old) stuff - there are lots on this board - just have a search through - and the stuff is to play is the stuff that *you* like.

Good luck
