Russ you sooo right !!!
people don't understand how serius it can be, my grandmother can bearly hear - and I know how hard to live it is when you almost can't hear,
all thing is that you can hear good now but it can come to you on age of 40 only becuase now you are playing loud music.

so hear in low volume, and decrese the treble as Russ said..

I know that my hearing isn't as good as it used to be.

But I'd like to raise another interesting point in this discussion - I feel like every time I go to a party with turbosound speakers (and a soundman that thinks that we NEED to feel like we stuck our head in a bucket of loud treble sounds ) I hear a sine wave after the party that lasts 6-40 hours (depending on the volume).

... what does the most damage to our hearing - frequency-wise?           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

Just wear earplugs and save your ears. I went to a punk show on this past Monday and my ears still have a tiny ring in them. I knew I should have worn them but I forgot to bring them. Now this Friday I will definitely bring them to Infected Mushroom in NYC. Stupid ringing.           It's moving so fast, it's standing still.

The ringing in the ears is your ear drum resonating after the party. The high frequencies are mostly causing those resonances and it's pretty harmfull. With the years go by your sensitivity for high freqs will be damaged.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

extended exposure to harsh sounds actually break the minute hairs in your ears which trigger the sound in your brain. once these hairs are broken, whatever frequencies those hairs correspong to are in a continual "on" state. in other words, they keep sending signals to the brain that you are hearing sounds, hence the ringing. the highs are far far far more dangerous than the lows when it comes to hearing damage.

Yeah I experienced some of this, wasn't funny to have this ringing constantly in your ears for a couple of days.

Just don't go too close to the speakers, when you are at a party.

Last party I was at, the volume was way too high and my ears started to ache.
I put in my earplugs in the morning, and lay down on the ground to take a rest. The vibes of the bass came straight to my stomach and it was great.

It also made me understand how loud the music was, because even with the earplugs in my ears were still hurting.

Be carefull with your ears and also with your knees... The organizers don't have control over how high can be the sound in a party?           .

The damage that occurs from loud sounds is the little hairs that vibrate inside your ear get flattened .. to put it simply it is like a light that goes on and off .. when the hairs get flattened they are stuck on on ..
Due to the way the ear is built the high freqs go first but it is dependent on what freqs cause the damage and the db SPL (Sound Pressure Level) ..

There are 'musicians' ear plugs which a doctor tests your hearing and then an earplug is tailored to your ears .. they are 3 times the price of normal ear plugs because they reduce the sound level without muffling the frequency spectrum .. like what happens with foam earplugs ..

I also have just heard of earplugs that people who work with turbine engines (in hydro electric plants I think) which do the same thing so they can hear the pitch of the engine ..

Protect your hearing .. I know someone at 40 could only hear between 2 - 4Khz in 1 ear .. the damage was caused by heavy machinery and they were wearing basic ear protection ..

Best not to dance in front of speakers .. you can feel the thump from a fair distance back from the PA because of the levels being used .. all that is occuring is hearing damage which will affect you in later life.. so what if you ears are ringing 3 days after a party then fine .. the more it happens the more you are stuffing your ears.
