So hey ho here we go. Now I'm getting bit more set up at home I'm keen to get good studio headphones. I live in an apartment & am saving for Adam monitors for my house in December. I'm keen to get good headphones in mean time as by birthday is soon.

For around say $300-400US what would you reccomend?

Cheers           Cuntus Maximus.

Are they very heavy? I forgot to mention I have chronic neck & back pain so the lighter the better as well           Cuntus Maximus.

btw k702 are identical to 701 except that you can change the cable on the 702

these are light to me (my lighter pair )

low is not very detailed on these but i have afraid you won t find a headphone that is good everywhere at that price

701 + ath m50 is good combo

check hd 600, dt 880/990 too

i use a crookwood DA/headphone amp, but tbh, the hd600 sounds amazing with anything, and i'd say it's not so important to use an amp if you can't afford it at first. e.g. sounds incredible with regular output of my cowon j3 player with flac files.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

Lookin at the HD600. I'll find a way to test them first of course. I can get them for $100 less than the AKG which means $100 more towards my other studio gear or some room treatment when my house is built           Cuntus Maximus.

it depends on which phones u get, certain ones like the dt880 600ohm need more juice then say the hd600, so check impedance levels, they do sound great on entry level amps but to get most out of them pretty much any mid-level amp should do, also if u decide on hd600 get a hd650 replacement cable, only $20 and improvement in cable quality n sound          https://soundcloud.com/alon-chen

Be careful if you want to produce for houres. The HD600 are detailed revealing but I bet you won't mix or produce on them for more than 2- max3 houres without taking a break to avoid really pains in ears..They are really shitty to wear (after 1-2 houres it is clear they are not that comfortable) - too tight on the head, somehow suboptimal construction when it comes to this important issue. They are sounding great though. If you can afford buy these for rather shorter production sessions or a different analysis.
My recommandation would be Bayerdynamics Dt 770 Pro or DT88o Pro, if you take the 77o's go for the 80Ohm version. Or Audio Technicas... that PoM already mentioned are also very good - and very nicely comfortable to wear, as well as the Bayerdynamics. Good feel' and of course known for good linear response. Also a longer mixing absolutely realistic and possible without having a break for days (from headphones) after a longer session.
