Any others that have experience with the ATH-M50 Ellon mentioned? It seems the most affordable one. So if it's a good one to start with, I'd consider upgrading my current headphones.

Beyerdynamics are pretty bad imo..muddy undetailed bass, way too sharp highs..nothing good imo, i own the DT 990 pro myself..

try Ultrasone Pro-550 and compare..that headphone is a pleasure to work with!           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-

hmmm.. strange. They are very linear and known for that, tons of audio engineers use them However, I know the Ultrasone too for years - not bad.My best mate has them. I would not say they are any tiny detail better though.I know them in and out for a few years meanwhile.Both.

The 990 Varies a lot from the 880´s.
The base is indeed more undetailed the 990´s.

Personally i can recommend the 880s warmly.
During travels for 6 months i only used em and the mixes translated well to my monitors when i got home.
Except maybe the baselines, but thats always hard with headphones.           .

Ok so it looks like I'm going to get the HD600's and this amp http://www.stereophonic.com.au/lehmann-rinelander-headphone-amp/

Thoughts?

fantastic choice mike! no idea on the amp, but i don't think you'll be disappointed with the HD600s. i completely disagree that they are painful to wear, they are without a doubt the most comfortable cans i have ever owned, (not to mention the best sounding). i can wear them for hours without a problem. however, everyone has a different size and shape ears and head, so always best to try before you buy if you can!           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

Indeed, very good for mixing especially, but if you have some mastering settings on master channel when mixing, then hd600 do well too. I'v been having both now on same amp few moths side by side.. But for sure K701 are more easier to analyse on mixing even in tiny volumes.. even the smallest changes on settings can be hear, especially when eqing.. I like hd600 too, but not for mixing that much.. not because the lack of details, but for their habit to boost something you are not boosting.. That was use to messing up my mixes sometimes when i got only hd600           - - - - -

I don't hear the HD600's boosting anything, flattest cans I've ever heard, translate well to my monitors which cost almost twenty times as much. But like I said, everyone has their own preferences in audio, different shaped ears and head etc.

I really didn't like the HD650, or K702 when I tried them.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

Ok, lets put it this way. If i'm mixing with K701, it will sound good in HD600, KRK's and psb speakers, but if i'm mixing with HD600 it wont sound good in other systems, i always have to correct something too much. With proper settings in master channel i can manage, but using only K701 comes easier, then i only have to check the result from speakers and make tiny adjustments to the mix.. But i think its also because i'v used to work to the K701 since 2008 and knowing them very well, but they was my pick even i got HD600 earlier and liked them until i got K701.
I'm thinking to by a second pair for just in case
They say that Q701 are a bit warmer. Only thing what i wonder in K701 is a bit cold overall sound but it also can give your mixes more warm sound until its more difficult to achieve with K701. Or A bit sharp highs (like K701 has) can give more smooth highs in to overall mix when you are scaring to boost them too much until they disturbing your ears too much. Very sensitive way of mixing with K701 i would say. Bass response also is small but very deep in my opinion, you can just lay down your bass to the overall mix with K701, its easier to make it sit down when you dont have to make it smaller because of a bit boosted and tube kind of low end what HD600 has.. To me it makes it more easier to find right balance with K701.

Aa i forgot to mention that i make better snares with HD600 that K701, that is true

I kind of take an advantage of their weaknesses, i use their sharpness as a reference to my mixes, thats my tactic

When sound comes too sharp in a particular source you know at least that its not too sharp in the real world.

Still have to say, that the flattest and the most transparent is not necessarily mean the same thing, i feel that K701 are more transparent or the most transparent headphones you can imaging. But it depends what you are after, to me its neutrality and transparent what comes mixing.

Got the Audio Technica ATH-M50s today. Really great headphones for the price IMO.

Will definitely see me through until I can justify some Beyerdynamics.           Cuntus Maximus.

I really like this headphones. And it looks like the price has come down. They used to cost around 200euros and now i see them at around 130euros. Maybe i'll dig in!!!!

I think you will be satisfied no matter the price point.

Here's a nice review on them:

disclaimer: i dont work for Audio-Technica nor do i have any comercial interest with them. I just find this headphones really good!

Yeah I agree with the review. For the last 2.5 years I've used audio technica's noise canceling headphones at home for music listening and always found the music was condensed. There was no space and hearing details was impossible.

I was diss appointed as they cost me almost $300 at the time, plus constant battery use for the actual noise canceling and built in sound amplifier.

When I went to be last night with the new ones, I was amazed at how clear and spacious both modern and old 90's goa/psy sounded.

The bass is much louder on them, not so much kicks by basslines. I'm interested as I get in to producing psy how much influence this has, I also note that at some point I'll need a headphone amp for sure as well.

When I cranked a bunch of Renegade Hardware's DnB style, even mp3s had a very defined sub bass sound compared to my noise canceling ones.

I'm interested to see how the build quality lasts, the noise canceling ones only lasted a year with minimal travel and kept in their hard case. It was then time to use super glue which has annoyed me as its ended up making them less movable and more difficult to find the sweet spot.

These are very light as well, I can got easily 2-3 hours and not notice any neck tiredness. At my audio engineering course they give us Shure headphones which tire me out after and hour or two, think I'll start taking these.

I might be tempted to get another pair. One for outside use and one to keep at home.

I also got to try Beyerdynamic 880's this week. Amazing headphones as well but I cannot convince myself the price justifies them. Headphones are so damn expensive here in Australia and most place O/S won't ship.

So value wise of definitely say get a set of these, after 20 years of headphones I've never made a happier purchase           Cuntus Maximus.

I'm very tempted to get a pair also....i do need an alternative source to hear mixes, correct frequencies, the ususal stuff. Besides my monitors, i'm using regular computer speakers and the car cd radio which is not practical...tired of recording a cd at the end of each day to listen in the car.

My Etymotic ER4-Ps died yesterday, gave me about 3 years of sterling service, which ain't bad for almost daily use. The ER6-Is I had before lasted about the same. Have ordered a red pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50s to replace them. I remember hearing a friends pair in Japan, and they weren't too shabby. Bass was a bit much, but then always felt bass on ER4-Ps was a bit light. Should do for mobile bus/dog walking use. Could take the nice Sennheiser HD600's out, but A) would look silly, and B) don't want to fuck them up, best cans I've ever owned/heard. Will report back when I've had a chance to test out the M50s!           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma
