You said it yourself, at 'twice' the price! What better closed headphones are there under $200? Not everyone can afford to shell out $400 for a pair of headphones!

had a chat with the bloke I'm doing studio work experience with as part of my studies. He chuckled and said in his opinion (this is after 30 years in a top studio & doing live gigs with some of the biggest names in the world) if you can get it to sound perfect on the ATH-M50 then it'll sound good anywhere, but if you can wait and buy some proper headphones for twice the price you won't be wasting so much time getting it to sound good. Instead you can spend it making more music.

Just a thought.           Cuntus Maximus.

I personally was planning on getting HD380's as i need closed headphones that can double up for recording when the need arises. Indeed i've heard a lot of praise about the HD600/650/800 but they're all open. I know the drawbacks of closed headphones but are there any that can compete with the HD series in terms of flatness & translation?

Only the Stax Electrostatics, but then you are talking a lot more money, like buying a new car.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

Use M50s if you like the sound, sure, I love them for walking about town with listening to FLACs on my portable player. And you can adjust to anything, like the NS10's you mention. Just be aware they are ultra smiley curve and that there are many more truthful sounding cans out there for about twice the price. People are used to hearing the smiley curve everywhere, which is why they love M50s, but an honest mix reference they aint!

really true that , but for me m50 don't need much adjusting compared to others cans i have for the balance of the mix . aslo most the system dancefloor music will be played will have a more similar frequency curve to the m50 insteed of a flat line.
would not be happy with these as my one and only pair though.
got them recomened by a legend of electronic music producer..who produce mostly on cans, he said me they offer bets translation.. dunno if it s true as i own only a few pair but him own all the good ones .m50 do work for techno, house trance, to get the beat and bassline rights..but after it s taste..like i said what work for someone is not good for everyone

what i want to mean with these i know it s possible to get good result when you learn them ,maybe it s possible on most decent cans dunno..often some say kick bass is very hard to get right on cans for example, not really on m50 with a good reference tune it give decent result.

i've tried them when i bought my headphones. actually, i was set on buying them after confirming that they sound good at the store. they do sound ok when compared to other headphones of that price. but after some comparisons my favourite were phones from sony (sadly, i forgot which model...) until i tried the akg k701, which i then took home

nice mate to have some news, can t wait to listen

Padmapani mentioned the 701 and you should try these if you didn t .i enjoy them very much but the low end is a bit shy..to me with a closed pair to complement them it s great , one open , one closed pair..so u can use ur cans everywhere

I own a pair of Ortofon O2 but i would not recommend them for mixing, mastering or monitoring....these are dj headphones...fairly nice ones but for djing.

I own a pair of ATHM50 and i like them. Definetely coloured but also comfortable and detailed. That being said i was impressed with my mate´s AKG 271...very clear, not bassy at all (maybe even missing a bit) and cristal clear. Not bad at all for the price tag

Well... If price is no object ever...

http://www.audeze.com/products/headphones/lcd-2

Audeze LCD series... Orthodynamics... I own a pair and I gotta say, they are phenomenal. Amazing clarity of bass, great transients, not even remotely fatiguing (well, except that they are kind of heavy). And - they are fairly low impedance, so the headphone jack on my interface is just fine without an additional amp.

Linear frequency (+/- 1db) bass register response from ~200hz down past 20hz is just... wow.           Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. ~Kurt Vonnegut

I was talking to Andrew from Interchill about his LCD-2s recently, he's very happy with them. Would love to shoot them out against the HD800s!           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

Get a pair of DT-880 Pro tho they are a litte above your pricetag. They have a great resolution fast transients and are quite neutral. + you can work a whole day (with small breaks) without getting exhausted or pressure on the ears.

to me it seems you can get decent result whatever you use once you are used to it..i have dt880 pro, akg701 and ath 50. the overall best are probably the akg but i like them all in the end for different things..
one open pair and one closed is the way to go i think..for the totally different sound and in noisy environnement open become useless.
