I emphatically disagree with anyone claiming that psychedelic trance must be experienced in a chemically augmented state of mind. I listen to this music precisely because it fires up my imagination in a natural way--no substances required.
If you're interested in the actual "trance state" then you may wish to research self-hypnosis, meditation, shamanism, and even a bit of "witchcraft, magic, the occult, and religion." Trance is the state of mind achieved at least twice daily (when you awake and when you fall asleep). This is why you have noticed some interesting things while dozing on the train. Generally, if you want to put yourself in a trance and cast a dream-like shroud over reality, you're going to need to do any number of things to alter your physiological state. If you look into shamanism you will find that everything from self-flagellation to mantra chanting has been used in different cultures. The steady rhyme and meter of hymns sung in the cathedrals of Big Religion achieves a similar purpose. Marketing and advertising in capitalist societies often employs repetition in order to plant suggestions in the minds of consumers (which is not to say you should go look at advertisements--I'm just pointing out how widespread trance really is). Yes, some people take drugs, but if you look into the practises of various cultures around the world, there are many other means of achieving the trance state. In the case of psychedelic dance music, a long night of dancing seems like a sensible course of action--repetitive physical activity will increase your susceptibility to a trance state, there is a connection to nature at open air events, and the flashing lights or colourful painted backdrops could send your brain spiralling off into outer space if the music doesn't catch you first 
Honestly, the environment of most psychedelic trance parties is not always conducive to achieving the state for which the music is named--sometimes there are too many distractions, and the music seldom flows as I imagine it should (but I am pickier than most). Perhaps that is why many people take the extra kick of drugs to get there? There are a few ways of looking at the greater issue of psychedelic drug usage as a means to bypass years of training and research. In the current climate of mass consumerism, people want instant gratification. Well, drugs can be seen as a sort of instant enlightenment--the mental monkey wrench of choice in the countercultural toolkit. However, they are by no means the only path from the valley to the mountain peak. |

well i can speak for myself & yes to me 'music' as in genral brings a psy state.
but i have to say that 'if music is a language then D's were my interpretors, & once i knew the language the interprtors were not necessary'.
fu*kin hell that sud be my new signature now
