So I've had some savings leftover... recently refurbished the studio, so acoustics/monitoring is not an issue right now.

If you had ~ $5000 US (3,500 Euro...) to spend on gear, what would you get synth-wise?

I love the Moog sound BUT a band-pass filter is really important to me, so I'd have to go Voyager or something like that.

What else could I get? What else is worth it? I have an MS-20 mini and love it - amazing analogy goodness - but don't like its noise issues/etc.

-Filter sound is most important... and this is why I like the Moog sound
-Will use it for mostly FX & Leads, but filtered juicy downtempo bass as well...
-Has to have midi...
-Clockable S&H via signal input is a major plus...

Voyager obviously looks good, can't get Macbeth stuff this side of the ocean , not sure what else. Ideas?

Prophet 12. It's absolutely amazing. A massive work horse that is built well, feels like a dream to use & will see you occupied easily for years. You can make any style of music with it. My good friend has one and I've played it on and off since it's release when he got it. It make my Sub Phatty seem like a crummy toy.

You could also build a pretty decent eurorack system for that price of you wanted to go modular.

Rumour at my local synth shop is that the Vouage will soon be phased out so I'd wait. And I find the Moog sound kinda boring now. It's been done to death.

A modular and a Moog Minitaur for the Moog sound and have all the psy basses, covered. If I wanted the Moog sound with a BPF, I'd put the Moog through the modular.

In Canada... so Macbeth not available without some fancy importing... Most other stuff is though.

Modular and Moog Minitaur seems like a half decent idea... Yeah done to death or not I still really like a gooey moog filter sound.

Always liked Prophets, though, too - had kinda forgotten about them. Maybe I'll see if any are available used.

I really don't know much about modulars... would I be able to build a usable, playable synth with comparable function to something like a voyager or prophet for this kind of price? I guess I have research to do...           Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. ~Kurt Vonnegut

Dude you live in Canada, Intellijel is Canadian based. You can build a modular with that cash that runs circles around a Voyager and sounds MUCH more interesting. If you want Moog sound, get a Minitaur/Slim/Sub phatty and spend the rest on Intellijel modules.

I'd go a eurorack system with some Intellijel & MakeNoise. Or if you want some chaos add some Harvestman for digital insanity.           Cuntus Maximus.

You should be able to get a MacBeth. The Goa Productions label owner live in Kunming, China which is where I played and recorded the MacBeth Micromac D.

It pisses over the Voyager, from a great height. It literally is the best sounding thing I've ever layed hands on.
The demos from the Elements sound even better.

I would not get a Voyager, unless I found one dirt cheap. You are paying premium price for the flagship Moog synth, it sounds great and all but compared to the modules you can get with that cash...I would choose a modular any day of the week...but that's just me.

I am lucky to live in a city with a fantastic synth shop and was just in there today picking up my first humble modular rack...here are my thoughts:

intellijel and make noise are the cream of the crop. I liked their sound considerably more than the malekko/doepfer/othernamesicanremember modules that I tried.

there is a voyager in the shop as well as a sub phatty and a minitaur. they all sound great and are immediately identifiable as 'that awesome sound'.

If I were in your position I'd do what Nectarios said for the most part - get a 'cheaper' moog (i'd go sub phatty over minitaur personally) and then build a nice modular with an expert sleepers module to bring your DAW and your modular together.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe
