Sounds like Colin is jealous & is suffering from what us Ozzies call tall poppy syndrome

Fact is Posford had money, probably therefore more time & quality gear compared to the majority back then. So he had a unique sound and it was therefore easier to sell. I am also not a massive fanboy, don't had any albums and give me IMO GNOTR anytime over Posford BUT his music is much more pleasurable than a lot of what else was released at the time.           Cuntus Maximus.

Having talent and being in the right place at the right time is obviously part of it, but in order for 'fame' to happen, someone has to spend money on getting the name in front of the maximum possible number of people. Traditionally that someone has been record labels but in an underground scene like this, it's often individual artists who have the resources to pay for their own promotion, or - for instance - to pay for their own flights to overseas festivals and thereby get themselves on the lineup by being much less costly to promoters than the alternative. Of course, the talent has to be there also - no-one wants to look stupid by booking a shit act just because they're cheap - but it's a misconception that artists get famous just because they're good. SOMEONE always spends money for that to happen, whether they're the Beatles, the Stones, Grandmaster Flash or Avalon.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

can't do anything except agree. not naming names but maybe it would come as another eye opener to some - when you read an interview with an act (psytrance included) or an album review that act in 90% of the cases payed money in order get in that media. even when you don't think it is an ad, it is an ad.

i have had a certain scene entity approach me recently and offered to post my music on their facebook and spam some groups and asked for hundreds of euros for it

Yeah, of course that happens, except when there isn't any money as in this scene as a whole (for artists and labels).

Simon, and other artist in the 90's, were in a more favorable context with real labels around.           "The dedication to repetition — the search for nirvana in a single held tone or an endlessly cycling rhythm — is one of electronic music's noblest gestures."

What do you mean, "there isn't any money in the scene as a whole"?

There is plenty of money in the scene...It is kind of interesting, way back in the day when Psy was really underground and before certain nationalities were allowed in Goa anyone was welcome to join... in the late 90s a psy mafia emerged, and the whole "me first, everyone else is an asshole mentality" came into the scene... and now it is music business just like everywhere else..."Oh, I am over budget already... really sorry... but can you play your music for the scene?" And after the party they count their dollars all too often... not all of them... but certainly most of the big parties...           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

this whole "there isn't any money, people don't buy music" type of stuff has got to stop. it is a myth. it isn't on maddona level sure, but there is more than enough.

Of course there's money in it, otherwise why would there be any multi day festivals? ozora, boom & universas parello or whatever it's called are now talked about here in australia by my mates who run some of the biggest commercial trash EDM promotional companies.

The problem is that there're so many bedroom producers. & dj's that the cash flow is limited, and of course only the names that cost little but bring in $$$ get the gigs. It's basic business . No one wants to pay for say OOOD live with 4 ppl when they could get a single person act for less that'd bring in the commercial crowd. And if they are going to get a big band style act it's gotta sell loads like Shpongle or IM who've sold out.           Cuntus Maximus.

How many money from how many festivals for how many artists?

And the number of festivals have been declining too, contraction is all around.

Guys get real, it's obvious there isn't enogh money around given supply and demand for artists.

How many artists make a living from playing only in psytrance festivals?

There is like 3 labels around, and a ratio of 3 fans per producer XD           "The dedication to repetition — the search for nirvana in a single held tone or an endlessly cycling rhythm — is one of electronic music's noblest gestures."

not every kid with a copy of floops is a producer even if he made a cool artist name with the word "psy" in it

oh theres money in the "scene" allright, question is - do you wanna be part of the "scene" ?

here in israel some producers discovered this fact and sadly 90% of the big parties in israel today have absolutely nothing to do with trance except for some of the artists playing - not the people (clubbers who were taken out from the club), not the vibe, not the nature itself nor the principles that drove this culture thus far... its a business and as such they are looking to maximize profits - nothing wrong with that at all, its just a fact and the parties look accordingly (to me at least).

then there are the small parties who carry the same spirit of 20 years ago there i can tell you there is absolutely no money, if you cover your expenses youll be pretty happy (yea on ocassions you can also get some decent profit) - but as cliche as it may sound, trance party organizers are in it for the love of trance and nature, not for the money, and this i am saying from my own 15 year experience partying

funny, my impression of the "small parties israeli scene" is they do it to have a platform from which to sell acid, as cliche as it may sound, and this i am saying from my own 15 year experience partying

two sides to every coin mate, just saying.

Login, no musicians make enough to earn a living on music alone.

A good friend of mine plays in a very successful death metal band from Australia. They are signed to one of the major global metal labels. They all still hold full time jobs & have to beg for annual leave to do the European summer festivals. They always come back & have almost zero money from these torus as it's expensive to live/tour in Europe. This is wth flights & accommodation covered.

I just think at a certain age like all people following a passion in the arts either become unsustainable financially & reality kicks in. I caught up with a friend who was one of the biggest rave dj's here in the 90's over the weekend, he           Cuntus Maximus.
