Hum interesting discussion... I agree and disagree with many things..Gms? No big a fan in particular but yet fully understand their music causes havoc in dancefloors.. although releasing a 'best of' cd sounds a bit commercial minded for this scene.

I also agree with the guy who mentioned people idolize artists and djs blindly.. Sometimes its because they are quite good or because they are god fathers of the scene or wear the right atire, I dont know but sometimes its just hype.

Simon Posford it must be said must be considered one of the major godfathers of goa/psy. His Hallucinogen album on Dragonfly in 94/95? is a landmark and certainly got my juices flowing.. But it is also clear that after that he never really did anything full on to that degree after that and his best work has been i other styles like Spongled..

It is true he is a great engineer but sometimes its about the track, the groove etc.. and in my opinion other artists have since taken over..

And in my opinion that is how it should be.. we need to let new talent take over so to speak.
No scene can survive in a timewarp.

well, i wish i looked at this thread before.
first, i was at samothraki but i didn't get to hear simon's stuff really, and i'm sorry for that.
the man sure knows what he's doing, but still, i think what most of you said here is bollocks.
first, i love full-on, but i bloody hate astrix, alien project, safi connection and so on for stealing gms's rhithm, that's one thing that caused full-on to deteriorate so much lately, copying, every new full-on artist nowadays just copies gms's bassline and works some things around it. but i take that as a testament that gms are true revolutionaries at their field. and although they produce large quantities of not so good tracks, they have a few that yes, kaz, i will remember, you might not like it, but take reload for example, dmt, and many more of their tracks occupied dancefloors for months upon months, so if it's hearing the mammoth hunters at many parties makes it a great track, why not say that these dancefloor hits are great tracks too? just because it's gms? that's stupid.
as for posford, he releases something new once every year or so, gms produce stuff a lot lately, and that's probably why they have a bad ratio, but if you want to compare how many great tracks they had and how many did he, well, i like gms better. they may be assholes (don't say they are, though most of you do), but i like hearing their music when i'm at a party more than almost anything else, and what i could see in samothraki was a whole island having a quake when gms were on. even our friends here in the forum who usually hate them, loved their show.
he could be the genious you're all saying he is, and i'm not saying gms are better than him, because that is just stupid, he does his music, they do theirs, the problem is how many copycats they have.
we are all talking personal taste, and everybody has a differant one, most of you guys hate skazi too, but many others love him, arguing about that is nonsense.
to tell you the truth (though i'll get hammered for this), i think the old hallucinogen stuff sound mostly like a mix of nitzhonot and psy, but he also had for me a few really good ones, though i love all his shpongle stuff.
and one more thing, remixing someone's track doesn't mean you try to show you're better than him, you remix it to make it more into your own style, from a more musical track to a dancefloor headbanger like reload, or gamma goblins.
hope i'm not banned from the forum now
and i'll give another example:
infected mushroom, i believe these guys are geniouses but i can't hear their music, i don't like it. i know that if they'll work at being good at the kind of music i like, they'll be great but they don't, that's just what i think of posford (and no i'm not comparing them )

well, i thought i was a GMS junkie too, and most of the time i like their bouncy music, but how they performed at the BOOM was dissapointing, and we saw no earthquake happen (like some of you did in Greece) Zorba at the appropriate time was much better, probably because less was expected.

GMS has become a cult, a legend if you like, of trance and for that I give them due respect. But hopefully they wont continue to take the whole movement for granted, with coninually double booking themselves, and bringing their clones instead of personally showing up at parties! Even BOOM-SAMOTHRAKI was too much, not to mention the excuse why they didnt turn up at the party in Portugal durting the VOOV!! And as for music, they have brought groove into trance like rarely anyone else! But now that formula is wearing away and new and more talented artists are replacing them...

There is only so much the masses will take and then stop supporting them....

I thought there was no place for inflated egos in this little but global family we have built around!
So, to GMS: keep up the groove and let go of the ego. we already know you can be damn good!

On a separate note: Simon Posford is excellent!
