hi guys I was just wondering what your personal funktion one experience has been like?
I really love good sound (total soundfreak) but last year on psycrowdelica when i heard funktion one for the first time i was utterly dissapointed. The high and mid frequencies was way to dominating and the sound had zero warmth. So my question is: Is funktion one overrated? or was it just confiquerd bad... Im going boom this year and really hope to get good funktion one experience.

^^ heard some pretty nice reviews about funktion one, but i also have heard not so good ones.

personally i did not like much this sound system on boom, but it is my humble opinion.

more insights about boom funktion system by our dear friend in here: http://forum.isratrance.com/boom-2010/7-164347/page5/

check the posts of subconsciousmind speccially and i agree with him in here: "Believe me guys "Funktion One" is just ONE BIG HYPE anymore. It's time is OVER."

my 2 cents on this matter           ...

Personally I think there are much better soundsystems out there than Funktion 1, but technology aside, what really makes the difference on the ground is the engineer who sets it up. You can have the best rig in the world but if it's not set up correctly it will sound shit; conversely if you have good ears and aren't afraid to make a graphic EQ scream you can tweak a poor system to get the best out of it.

Personally I'm looking forward to playing on the F1 rig at Glade Festival this year, but that's mainly because Tony Andrews himself will be engineering it. It did make me laugh though when, on the Boom video about Funktion 1, he was talking about how an all-analog signal path sounds better*, the video cut away to show the amp racks at the festival, each of which was crowned with a digital system controller. Go figure.

*...such as that used by my own personal favourite PA manufacturer Opus, who only sell complete systems comprising cabinets, analog crossovers and high-def amp systems, all designed and manufactured in-house.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

i find these to be better than funktion one.

but still i have to agree with colin that even a mediocre system can sound great when you have a proper engineer behind it!           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

Having played a couple of times with Funktion One i can say it's not my cup of tea also (maybe as Colin said it had to do with the setup). For me it always feels (either i'm playing or just in the audience) that F1 kills textures in the music....no matter what type of kick&bass i'm playing it transforms into the F1 kick&Bass type of sound...also pads and fx with a bit of mid-range tend to disappear!

But as i mentioned it, it has maybe to do with the tunning of the sound system...though i was not very impressed with Boom 2010 sound!

Played at a big Function 1 rig in Sol Fest last year.
It sounded brilliant. Best monitoring I had on stage as well with the small Function 1 rig used for monitoring.

But as already said, the FOH guy needs to know what he is doing.

Peace out.

Played on it on several occasions and it's second to none from what I've been in touch with.

Thinking back its true the mid range was poor. But i really think (at psycrow 2011) the system was just set-up extremely bad. There wasent even any real bass, like they cut the low arround 110hz. But i guess some genres work better for F1 than others. For instant Hi tech sounds should be nice on F1 compared to groovy forrest sounds.

Well mixed music, sounds great on a good system.
Poor mixed music sounds bad on a good system.

Peace out.

to be honest, I've only noticed a huge difference in one genre: drum n bass.

I really think these were designed for drum n bass. I've never heard dnb sound so crisp than on funktion 1.

If an F1 rig sounds like shit it is operator error!
Either the person responsible for setting it up or the wanker producer (they are legion) who thinks that everything above 8Khz and ESPECIALLY hihats is where the psychedelia and focus must be. To be more blunt...Shit in=shit out!
These are some of the most phase correct boxes i have played on and that includes whatever high end rigs you can mention, i played them all. There is a headroom in this system not to forget a lack of distortion which does lead some people to think it´s not playing loud enough (even when it´s close to jet engine volumes) It´s just that clean! A close second would be Nexo and especially their Geo-T. That is a system you can truly have physical experiences with, but it needs more expertise to set up properly and the sound reproduction of them has varied for me way more than when playing on different F1´s. A badge of distinction must also go to Opus whose sound i like a lot and it seems to be more forgiving as well.
For monitoring on stage i would take F1 any day! It´s the only time live that i can really hear (and enjoy) everything on stage. I loved Turbosound, but F1 is next generation stuff and honestly some of the best boxes for psy, especially outdoors. I would still say the verdict is out indoors but that mostly has to do with lack of focus on acoustics in clubs and not the speakers as such.
Music should ideally sound good on most expensive rigs, but some are more forgiving and are probably better suited overall. I do not count F1 as being a forgiving system. It does not have a very broad range musically and seems to do well only with electronic stuff.           Mastering available here:

I also would like to stress that having heard a broad spectrum of trance styles on the same F1 system, the music varied from sounding brilliant, to completely sh!t and I will not name names and turn this into another darkpsy bashing thread...but it goes to show that its not the system's fault, nor where they "not tuned well for the forest frequencies and the true 432hz tuning for psychedelic" as I read some time ago on facebook

Peace out.
