I like the first tune, but the main effect that drops in is too loud for the rest of the mix. It sounds like an afterthought.

Also have mixed reaction to the rest. about 1/3 of the album is too "dopey, smiley, house" for my tastes. But there are some stompers included.

Review:

Slippery when wet!

The first 2006 release on Danish label Iboga Records, is the debut album from Flowjob. This Danish duo consists of Joakim HjĆørne and Mads Tinggaard who prior to this album has released a handful of tracks ā€“ primarily on Iboga and Tribal Vision Recordsā€¦ So far Iā€™ve liked every single track Iā€™ve heard from these progressive marvels ā€“ so Iā€™ve been looking forward to this album for at long timeā€¦

Let me take you thru the tracksā€¦

#01: Run Baby Run (The Big Escape Version) [132 BPM]
ā€œIt's an entirely new game system!ā€ What better way to open a debut album, than with a big, lengthy, epic smash? And when I say epic, I mean epic! This is slow-building, extended-into-oblivion progressive tranceā€¦ Complete with sci-fi samples, tribal drums, digital chanting, floating/epic melodies and enough subtle groove to satisfy most peopleā€¦ The track doesnā€™t really take off before the 3ā€™23 mark ā€“ but when it does, itā€™s with such preserved energy, that you cannot help but crack a big old smileā€¦ Usually I would have deemed this style too cheesy, but somehow this rubs me the right wayā€¦ A very nice opening track!

#02: Everland Airport [131 BPM]
ā€œElectric, electric powerā€¦!ā€ This track pretty much skips any kind of intro and launches straight into banging, electro-ridden funkinessā€¦ The female vox doesnā€™t seem that well thought-out, and I could do without themā€¦ I do however like the phat electro passages and the simple-yet-effective rhythm sectionā€¦ Not bad at all ā€“ but not too amazing eitherā€¦

#03: Flangers In The Night [132 BPM]
As the title subtly hints, weā€™re digging deeper now ā€“ towards darker night time teKk-tranceā€¦ Donā€™t get me wrong, this is not minimal techno or anything; itā€™s just quite a tad darker than the previous tracksā€¦ Iā€™m totally into edgy stuff, and especially the second part of this tune is magnificent!

#04: Have Fun And Survive [133 BPM]
After the previous venture into the dark side, I was kinda hoping weā€™d stay thereā€¦ But no, this is much more ā€˜over groundā€™ ā€“ with a cheesy voice sample and a generally uplifting atmosphereā€¦ Now I hate to come across as negative sounding here ā€“ that was not my intention, as this is indeed an interesting trackā€¦ The steady electro groove is hypnotizing and the bass is deeper than everā€¦ Also the old-school disco synths are pretty neat! But thatā€™s itā€¦ Nothing to get too excited aboutā€¦ I guess it will work as a DJ tool, but for home listening I donā€™t think this one is gonna get that much playtime on my systemā€¦

#05: Wannafrisbee [132 BPM]
Half-way thru the album, and itā€™s time for some sexy beach house tranceā€¦ As with the opening track, this one takes itā€™s time slowly building tension before letting steam offā€¦ The absurd thing is that the climax never really comesā€¦ Thereā€™s nothing wrong with that, and this is another brilliantly produced groove-beastā€¦ I just wish it went somewhereā€¦ So, this is great for background music or as a DJ transition tool and not-so-great for the nitty-gritty partyā€¦ And hey, I know that probably never was the intentionā€¦

#06: They Are Not Alone [132 BPM]
Next up, is perhaps the most reverb-soaked and funky number off the albumā€¦ The intro is subtle and mouth-watering and when the track finally gets into gear, itā€™s mostly rewardingā€¦ Iā€™m not a fan of the ragamuffin vocals, but I choose to overhear them hereā€¦ For the most part this is a nice, steady groover of a track, and especially the last three minutes are brilliantā€¦ But I still canā€™t shake my momentarily boredom when listening to this trackā€¦ Something is missingā€¦;o/

#07: Mood Food [133 BPM]
ā€œLadies and Gentlemen, you may think you've seen the unusual. You may think you've seen the bizarre. But I've travelled to the five corners of the world, and let me tell you, I've never seen anything like thisā€. Luckily Mood Food comes along and saves the dayā€¦ Whereas the previous tracks were more or less elevator music, hereā€™s a track that stands-out and deserves to be played loudly on the dancefloorā€¦ This is subtle progressive trance ranging on both electro-passages and uplifting morning tranceā€¦ Groovy as hell and definitely a feel-good trackā€¦ A brilliant tune!

#08: Wadley [128 BPM]
This track was already released on the 2005 Iboga compilation Set/5 ā€“ Summer Collection so Iā€™m just gonna copy/paste my review from back then: [ā€¦] This is an afternoon burnerā€¦The rhythm section is funky and progressive, the melodic leads are solid ā€“ and the guys are not afraid of experimentation, as we get all kinds of world beats influences throughout the trackā€¦ Well done! Again this track suffers from stand-still syndrome towards the end, but itā€™s not too badā€¦ I can cope! Still a brilliant track!

#09: Glitter (feat. Trine) [133 BPM]
On the closing track, the guys are joined by some Danish vocalist-chick called Trine Jensenā€¦. The lyrics she sings are not going to go down in musical history, but she sure has an angelic voiceā€¦ Itā€™s very feminine, yet nasal somehowā€¦ Itā€™s great! Only problem is that it doesnā€™t really fit this track that wellā€¦ Itā€™s much better than the previous vocals on this album, but her singing style would fit euro-house much betterā€¦ In that sense, I have mixed feelings about this trackā€¦ Her voice is excellent ā€“ and so is the musicā€¦But together they form a hybrid that doesnā€™t really *do* it for meā€¦ And thatā€™s a shame coz individually both the music and the singing rules!

So, was this album as good as Iā€™d hoped for after the brilliant compilation tracks? In short ā€“ no! A longer explanation would be me stressing, that this is an extremely well-produced album ā€“ with a couple of really excellent tunesā€¦ And couple of very nice tunes ā€“ and a handful of decent tunesā€¦ The artwork is lovely as always, and with only a minor fluke, the flow is pretty steady tooā€¦

Let me also stress, that there are no bad tracks here ā€“ some of the tracks are just not what I expected or hoped forā€¦ They are too many stand-still passages here, and thatā€™s a shame, coz when the guys crank up the old party meter, they do it so wellā€¦ But hey, fans of the slicker side of Iboga Records will most definitely have a field day with this album ā€“ as will fans of Gaudium and similar crossover progressive tranceā€¦ So, in conclusion, this is not my favā€™e among recent Iboga releases ā€“ but even when itā€™s sub par Iboga stuff, itā€™s still pretty classyā€¦ Enjoy!

After several tracks on various compilations, Flowjob (Joakim Hjorne & Mads Tinggaard) from Denmark is out with their debut album on Danish Iboga Records. As usual from this label, we receive an album full of drifting progressive sounds.

Flowjob “Support Normality” Iboga Records 2006 (IBOGACD36)

1. Run Baby run (The Big Escape Version)
2. Everland Airport
3. Flangers In The Night
4. Have Fun & Survive
5. Wannafrisbee
6. They Are Not Alone
7. Mood Food
8. Wadley
9. Glitter (Feat. Trine)

This album starts with a really long track, including a beautiful, floating intro, which I can imagine could turn into a nice chill out track too. But, after a while, the progressive trance drift starts rolling. Melodic progressive trance for the morning with a happy vibe. My favourite track on this album. Most of the tracks we get here has a pretty light, happy vibe. In general, most of the tracks sounds more like progressive house than progressive trance, but I guess they have a foot in both genres. They also put in some elctro vibes in several tracks, which seems to be the new trend in many progressive releases these days. The last track we get here has a lot of female vocals (Trine), which makes it sound like a pop house track. Surprising for sure. One of my favourite tracks here is track 8 (Wadley), which has a very happy vibe, but doesn’t become too fluffy.

The debut album by Flowjob is much more housey than I expected. Actually a step away from trance. Happy, melodic progressive house, which should fit on sunny days this summer. But anyway, pretty nice to hear some new directions from Iboga, although personally I like it a bit more trippy and trance oriented than this.

Listening to it now again and this is just great! Maybe I'm more open to these proggy vibes in summer, or it's my new monitor speakers (KRK v6 Series 2) that make me like this even more than I did before!! Stellar effort from these boys. Apart from the last track I like each and every track. Nice artwork on the cd too.           "Subconscious unravels at the point of death, and all time it has known erupts into a moment.
