I too have tested and tried many different effects plugins and thought i'd share my favourites.
EQ:
Fabfilter Pro Q
Compressor:
DMG Audio Equilibrium,SSL and 1176 emulations
Distortion:
Fab Filter Saturn (cleanest and fattest ive found)
Chorus:
Blue Cat Chorus
Filter:
Vengeance Philter
Reverb:
RC48 and Vahalla Room
Delay
Fab filter - timeless
Flanger / Phaser:
U-He – Uhbik F
U-He – Uhbik P

only just notice this post knokz - yeh this is my all time favourite thing to do!
but instead I have and mid and side channel separate inc varouse fx and sidechanning - then I feed them both (prefader) into a single mix channel to widen even further then if that wasn't good enough I re feed them back into fx verbs or spread delays , the depths that can be achieved (headphones or treated rooms) is fucking INSANE!

This i think is where most of the secrets lie .. in this sort of processing for sound design - some big big spaces can be achieved - spending hours n hours breaking 3 dimensional space !!! 
wouldnt say im pro at it yet but im working on a chain where no matter how many sounds i throw at it they can all be herd in there own space and enjoying the space together shared through doing some serious MIDSIDE fucking and re routing back n forth - considerate it as a nutty professors stereo lab  Devasya Savitur |
