I don't understand why people like the sausage fattener so much. I have tried it many times (even bought it). But I always finds, it just adds volume. Not fatness...           soundcloud.com/supergroover

Quadrafuzz if you are on Cubase, other way around, pretty much nothing to scream about:

+1

Especially rack solutions in Live, I can bet it's already done by someone.

Don't ask, don't tell, but I got a Quadrafuzz VST on my Ableton (perhaps it's something completely different and I'm just dumb at the moment.. but it's Friday so I've got an excuse)

About plugins I use in every tune.. native Ableton ones (cause I'm using Ableton.. else it would be whatever native ones come with the DAW).
Good enough, I be I'll never get my head around learning everything they can do, and I can do what I intend with them with good-enough quality for me to notice.

Else wise there isn't a single plugin that is mandatory for me, and I can live very well like this
It's not that tool that counts, but how you use it.           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

In Live it's very easy. There is an multiband compressor called Multiband Dynamics. Open an audio rack, drop there 3 instances of this plugin set the frequency ranges and solo one of them on each instance. Then drop effects you want to use on specific band
For example:

That's the drill I guess, I had similar rack for kicks layering with macros assigned and everything, of course I just used one, but that's idea/approach, racks are awesome

One thing I like to add on that is M/S processing - be it with the Utility plugin (one part of the rack has 200% width, the other has 0% width) or using the most wonderful EQ8 Just start imagining fraxi's rack, one on the M and the other on the S, and make stuff move!

A flanger on the sides, phaser only in the M lows, some delay on the M highs, filter sweep all the mids on both M and S.. and let the psychedelia break through           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz
