Universal Music Group Reduces CD Prices
September 3, 2003: 11:15 a.m. EST

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Vivendi Universal's (V) Universal Music Group plans to sharply lower the consumer cost for compact discs, in an effort to bring customers back into retail stores and boost music sales.

The move comes as the music industry grapples with a continuing decline in retail sales in the face of rampant piracy and other problems.

In a press release Wednesday, Universal Music said it will reduce wholesale prices and implement a $12.98 manufacturer suggested retail price on virtually all of its top-line CDs in the U.S.

The plan will eliminate MSRPs of as much as $18.98, and the company believes retailers will start offering the cheaper CDs as soon as Oct. 1.

Universal Music's labels also plan to significantly increase direct-to- consumer advertising to raise awareness of artists and their music.

The company, whose artists range from U2 to Reba McIntyre, will also cut wholesale prices on cassettes so its MSRP for top-line releases will be $8.98.

The pricing policy will also apply to the company's historic catalog of recordings, which include artists like Abba, Ella Fitzgerald and Nirvana.

"We strongly believe that when the prices are dramatically reduced on so many titles, we will drive consumers back to stores and significantly bolster music sales," said Universal Music Chief Executive Doug Morris in the release.

The company, with $6 billion in annual revenue, isn't part of Vivendi's entertainment assets that are slated to be merged with General Electric Co.'s ( GE) NBC.

Vivendi removed the music assets from its auction process in July, in part because the French conglomerate feared selling the business when music valuations were at such low levels.

The question is if any small labels will be able to lower their prices too? If no one buy their products it seem hard to do that.

think globalism

haven't you all noticed the mentionable price droppings on various sites ? 11$ for a cd ? 9$ for a cd ?

if a label ships a cheaper (say 8$) cd to a store, the store owner will be tempted to raise the prise to the 14 or 15$ of the regular cd's, now i guess they'll only raise it to the 11$

(people push prices up on all levels of the distribution of a cd ... but if the major labels fixate on a certain price, it would be only correct for other labels to *try* and do the same           www.psytracks.com :: Brand new website for sharing your psytracks with the world. If labels were shipping directly on all shops around the world then the prices would be very low BUT labels dont do so cause thats just impossible, thats why our dear distributors exist.           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

detox absolutely, and i completely understand that... but maybe... just maybe... they (distribution, and SHOPS) can also survive making just a little less money of it

not all the savings have to come from the label!

direct distribution is a dream (for artists and labels), that won't work for some time (bruce springsteen and prince tried it, and failed, so did quite a few other artists).

80 nis or 40 nis... What does it matter when people can get the music for nothing with a click of a button?

It's not just one big company, it's THE biggest label in the world. If they can't influence the music market, no one can. 5 dollars is a huge cut, and it will be very intresting to see how the other labels react to this. I'll definetly buy the new U2 album if it will only cost me 13 bucks.

Yes UniverSal is THE machine, THE monster, THE terminator...

and I could just on it (it's so powerful here in France... producing ALL the f....ing Star Academies, Seeking for the New Star, PopStars and others Real-Tvs albums...)

They are making the Rain and the Sun in the mainstream Music here around...

About the Cd prices it's just the minimum they can do...... as the MUSIC has been for LONG not their first source of incomes, but the derivated products (clothes, posters, toys, and so on)...

Yet the question is indeed to see how other music companies will re-act.... and later how will the whole alternative scene (electronic or not) will take the blow...

There I come back with my Picture of the guys prefering to eat too much boiled and first-price Pastas with some Ketchup as a Sauce while he could easily cook with better recipes....

The thing is that he's much too tightfisted for that...

And when he's invited to dinner by a cordon-bleu friend, he's just so flabbergasted by the difference...

Unfortunately sometimes it is not enough to change him.... and he holds on feeling well-off in his mediocrity..

He's the first one to begrudge, because he really misses something..

Same goes for Music.
Cheers           .

it is matter, when i went to buy a cd one day..(don't remember which one)
but the cd was extremly expensive (75 nis!)
so i didn't buy it!
but if it was 50 nis i would buy it..

IT IS MATTER!           u can find "Anything U Want" using the search...
