it's true that wav files are really big... so why not use a compressed lossless format, like FLAC? (or APE like Mike A suggested) Takes the file size down to about half that of wave.

I have been DJing from a laptop using 192kbps Mp4 / AAC's for the last 9 months, and they sound great on ANY system, as well as being more stable, easier to edit / manipulate AND slightly smaller than 320kbps MP3 files.

hod gavriel, russ and Chrizzzzzbo,
you´re totally right.
to me it seems like showing-off, pretending that thei can hear or feel a difference between 192kbps and wav filez...
i´d like to make a test with all you pretenders and i would bet that the result will be the same as those food/ coocking tests with famous cooks - they would to disgrace themselves... (hahaha, that´s fort sure...)
come on people, maybe i´m wrong but that would astonish me a lot.
i´ve tested that myself with sennheiser hd25 headphones and till 160 kbps i could hear a slight difference but from 192 on it was absolutely the same (with the lame codec)
and the argument that there is change for the worse with what you can "feel" seems even more stupid to me, cause the mp3 compression only cuts off unhearable frequencies above 20khtz, not below 40 htz/ in the subs...
sorry for criticizing you guys. i can understand you very well. i´m exactly like you - to me it is very important to have the best soundquality possible. but music and sound quality is more than technical specifications...

deejayridoo, on some audio files I have been clearly able to detect a difference between 320kbps and wav, while on other I couldn't hear a difference between 128 and wav. It all depends on the source, but I'm not taking the risk.

I guess there may be some deterioration in the encoding of the MP3, which is another factor that makes MP4 / AAC much better...... I think this is the usual problem that makes .wav sound better than the equivalent MP3. Try doing the same by encoding an MP4, an MP3 and then comparing them both with the .wav. However,as Deejayridoo says, it is still a subjective test, because it all depends on the equipment used to test it.
