Underground goes online:

[Hamburg, June 30th, 2004] Plusquam Records prowdly announces the start of the new music-on-demand portal clickatrack.com.

clickatrack.com offers a combined shop solution for mailorder and mp3 download.

Since a while, the music industry spends a lot of energy in finding protection systems against music piracy. But all this effords made one thing totally clear; the fact that restrictions like copy protections or criminalizing the own clients is not the right way to deal with problem of illeagal peer to peer networks or copying. Rather than that, it makes a lot more sense to use the great potential of the world wide web and to prepare legal ways for downloading music and making your repertoire available through the net.

cikatrack.com is the first music-on-demand platform which is only focussed on underground music and specialized in psychedelic trance, progressive trance and ambient.

This platfrom is hosted by the Hamburg based progressive trance label Plusquam Records.

Beneath ordering the original CD, clickatrack.com offers the possibility to download the complete release or only single tracks of it in high quality mp3 format (192 kbit/s). Like this, everybody can collect his own compilation..

Two different user accounts are possible. Registrated for an Standard Account, each track costs 0,99 Euro. If you sign up for an Abo Account, you buy a parcel of 10 tracks, but pay only for 9. Like this you get a 10% discount and every track costs only 0,89 Euro.
Payments by creditcard (via paypal), bank transfer, money order and cash on delivery are allowed. If you pay by creditcard, the selected tracks are immediately ready for download in the users My Account menue.

The shop works in every country worldwide, no matter if you use Windows PC or Mac.

For the start you will find beneath the catalogue of Plusquam, the releases of Hadshot Haheizar, Balloonia, Ultimae, Iboga, Digital Structures, Spiral Trax, ACDC, P.O.R.N., Domo and c.o.r.n. recordings. New releases and more labels will be added weekly.. we're just about to prepare Flow Records, Aurinko, Avalanche, Midijum and Spirit Zone..

Everybody can download the favorite track legally, in the right version, with the right name and in good quality, without spending much time with searching the web and downloading fakes.

I must say that this seems like a nice idea – great to finally see it launched. The prices seem quite fair, and it’s great to see some of my favourite labels are already a part of the new project.

I would love to see some more labels join up though, and even more important: some of those old and really hard to get releases in stock - and perhaps full tracks as teasers for upcoming albums?

Something people probably will complain about though is that the files are only in 192kbps - the same as the files you can get for free (and illegally) on the net.          DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

.. this is just the start version.

of course we will add old, hard to get or sold out stuff. this just quite a lot of work and will take some time..

also we will have teasers for upcoming releases for registered users, as well as tracks, or special versions of tracks, which will be only availabe at our shop..

the reason for the quality of 192 kbit/s is easy to explain... the files are already in this quality quite big. most of them around 10MB. if the quality would be better, it would be just impossible for users with slower connections to load down anything. we can't expect yet that everybody use a cable / broadband connection.

Some initial feedback: your FAQ doesn't even detail exact MP3 specs, that could be helpful. Secondly some of us are on broadband and would pay a bit more for .wav downloads, so at least consider it. You could actually run a bittorrent tracker with authorization after payment and have the users who purchase help each other to download and save yourself a little bit of bandwidth. I don't really know why someone would buy an mp3 but then again I dj, so I probably have different concerns for sound quality than the usual listener. Just some thoughts for you guys, options are always good I wish you luck on this project... peace.

i think it would work much better if the tracks were WAV quality like the original cds, thats why djs buy original cds

I dont think people are going to pay for release mp3 cause they can get it very easy on the net.

If True wav the price should be a little more expensive.

thats a good step though, good luck!

Peace!

I know that .wav quality is still an impossible pipedream (too much bandwidth), but I would really suggest making at least a 256 or 320 kbps option available - for a bit of a higher price. Most of the other paid download services (EDM Digital, 3beat, Bedrock, Release Rec., etc) for electronic music do offer a higher bitrate for somewhat higher of a price, while still having a lower bitrate for cheaper. 192kbps is OK for home listening, but really useless to a DJ. 256 or 320 kbps is the minimum acceptable quality which is OK to be played over any system larger than home speakers.

With the labels you list, I would probably immediately blow at least €20-30 were a higher bitrate available. And I'm sure I'm not the only person waiting for a better quality before unsheathing the credit card.

But it's still definitely great to see a service like this with some really cool labels getting started, though. Certainly a step in the right direction.

This is a Great Leap Forward (scuse the pun)!!!!

Some thinking points:-
Isnt VBR better in terms of filesize vs Quality.

I know MP3 is the standard, yet there are other codecs (MPRpro, ogg vorbis , WMA which can be locked), whats the best/useable?

I read that there is technology to water mark MP3 files so that the buyers details can be encrypted in the file...if it is shared then the source is known...is this cool or not!!!

And finally, is there a chance to include the special Aes Dana limited edition 'Aftermath' that many of us around the world missed

As I know .wma and .aac (maybe .attrac3) are the best for music downloading, because these formats are copy-protected. Microsoft makes .wma, and Apple makes .aac. At the moment Apple's format is more popular, but more portable player supports wma, which is a great advantage. All of these formats gives the same quality.

Has anyone some experience about the safeness (against copy) of these formats?

That maybe right for home listening... but any DJ playing on a big rig would be put off.
It's not always just what you hear but also what you 'FEEL' moving through your body (bass, top end, etc). At 192kbps you lose frequency from the top and bottom end. This WILL have an effect when amplified over a big sound system, e.g. festival!

I know I wouldn't ever play MP3(192kbps) when DJ'ing... give me the full WAV file anyday.

I think some of you dj's are being a little paranoid about sound quality

An honest question: How many dj's are actually playing out on proper large sound systems most of the time, if ever?

Most sound (but not all) I've heard at trance parties, from clubs to festivals, has been pretty poor. Either the deaf PA man is compressing the fuck out of the sound, or he's got the eq like he's doing a rock band, or the speakers suck to begin with, or the dj's are christmas-treeing the mixer and giving everybody unhealthy doses of very loud distortion. I think that you MIGHT be able to hear differences in sound on a proper system or a very nice pair of speakers at home, but I have trouble believing the sound difference is going to be that huge when the sound is simply not very good to begin with.

For those lucky enough to play on a crystal clear huge rig outside or a superclub sound system, I would stick with the wave files, but for the most common situations, high qualty mp3's should do the trick.

To put it another way, a LOT of dj's burn their vinyl to play off of cd-r, especially when they play overseas where lugging around a bunch of records is a pain. Burning from vinyl to cd-r will certainly hurt the sound. I think a high-quality mp3 from the master (like you can get at 3beat's digital download site) has got to be better than a cd-r from vinyl.
