I've got a mate here in the UK who still plays of DAT's.
He bought them years ago, and used to mix half-vinyl and half-dat. He's never mixed off CD's.
(He doesn't get out much)

I was wondering if anyone else still plays of DAT tapes..? This guy gigs about once every couple of months, and always -- ALWAYS -- uses his DATs.

Anyone...?

surely Gill does CD now.. with his mix CDs and stuff...?c there's beatmatmatching (well, sort of)

@ h2so4: DAT is Digital Audio Tape that's largely redundant both as audio and data storage. "Back" "In" "The" "Day" the goa DJs used it as vinyl would melt, and CD mixers weren't generally about yet.

stands for Digital Audio Tape. Its a small cassete. It can be used either as a backup media (for pc use) or for audio recording with better quality than cds. maximum sample rate is 48Khz (while on cd's is 44,1Khz). And is also something that i want to buy for 4 years but never did 'till now

Using a DAT in today's HIGH speed society is useless...!

But I admit, that DAT was the standard way to exchange music some years ago....
I have a DAT player somewhere in my old house...but I realy don't miss it!

i don't recall anyone who would use them for djing purposes. but i still record tracks on dat (and on hard drive). if it's possible i want the production master to be done from
my dat recordings rather than from cd-rs. it sounds better, atleast for me

Theo switched over to CDs...

the thing about recording with DAT... yes DAT is higher quality, but thats only if you are recording from the master onto DAT for example...

but these days the few DAT DJs I know record their music from CD's most of the time....
and then claim that their DATs are higher quality... first of all they are recording CD quality music, and second you're loosing a generation anyway.

also most DAT djs dont beat match/mix etc... just fades mostly... now why would you want to limit yourself to just fading in and out of tracks and 90% of the time playing full tracks... when you could be using CDJs and actually DJing?

with good long mixing you can create your own 'track' in the mix... so much more controle, so much more interaction with the music....

(yes i have heard people play great sets on DAT)

but even a DJ playing a brilliant DAT set could probably improve their set and style with the use of CDs...
my theory is that people who still use DATs are too lazy to switch over and learn new equipment (or tried and couldnt handle it)....           www.facebook.com/DjJanux

Because you dont really give a damn about mixing and the art of DJing other than playing music for the sake of the music.

The art of presenting the tracks using other types of mixing other than just outro->intro mixing or trainwrecking has no appeal whatsoever.

This is enough for some people - As long as theres music, they are happy. (and Im not going to talk about the quality of the music, since that is subjective to the listener - and really, playing one media or the other cannot be said to endorse good track selection).

Only thing left to conclude is that top notch mixing isnt that important when it comes to DAT DJs or their fans.

As far as TOP NOTCH MIXING using DATS - Well, You might be able to achieve something like an ok beat match with unpitchable DATs by hitting START+PAUSE untill the beats align - However, you will not be able to do a perfectly structured beatmix that way - Also, you will limit your beatmixing to tracks of the same BPM, which I really find must be troublesome when it comes to creating the best flow that you can with the tracks at your disposal.

Whether anyone is using a pitchable DAT, which can Pitch Bend and Cue->Start as well as a CDJ I dont know... I doubt it.

Best Wishes
