you cant get away from mozart this year here in austria cause of his 250th anniversary.

Yea.. Jagjit Singh played near my plae a lil while ago. Was never really fond of his stuff, but most of my friends (who actually understand what he's saying) swear by him.

Jagjit Singh i would say is into Semmi Classical though some of his early stuff & sum of his live performances he has done sum axtraordinary classical stuff like a Raag Darbari Bandish from Live at Royal Albert Hall, London is absolutely 'classic' classical act......

Nusrat: Now he is a legend, his variations from hardcore hindustani classical to fusion with western influences, from soothing Patiala gharana compositions to sufi shahi qawwalis are just no comparisons & all the way psychedelic……

Another name i would like to mention is Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, who gave a different dimension to hollow guitar by playing it laid down & with sliding keys, producing a fabulous sound sumthin like a veena, the insturment he plays is named as 'Mohan Veena'. He is a grammy award winner & has quite a big contribution in getting the indian classical to the world platform.

And likes of Pandit Ravi Shankar & Ustad Allah Rakha have a huge listeners around the globe & what else this duo was a wave during Wood Stock days...........

The names are innumerable, Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma, Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Saheb, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Pt. Jasraj, Ms Subbalakshmi, Hari Haran, Abida Parveen are some i listen to & like..........

2-3 years ago i got very into sufi music, delighted by Nusrat and captivated by Abida amongst others.
Nowadays i'm not listening them anymore, i enjoy them more just as a sample in a psytrance song. That's enough.

Root of all music nowadays have been influenced by classical music. i.e jazz patterns are taken off some of Bach's composition's key patterns. And some rock music too has some bach in it.
Bach is probably the person who gave the face of modern music today, which was developed further by likes of Mozart, and Beethoven to the perfection.
I really like Schumann's piano compositions too and some of Shostakovich symphonies.

For western music, I like to reserve the term "classical" for that period of time after Mozart but before Johann Strauss, for which Beethoven is the prime example. This is a more academic definition and this would all be understood if you talked to a music historian.

For musicologists "Classical" is not after Mozart and before J. Strauss(son)...

"Classical" is the Haydn and Mozart period and it finish with Beethoven.
Beethoven even belong in the Romanticism (wich is the period after the Classical one) in his latest works.
With J Strauss, we're already into Romanticism since around 50 years...
