I most definatly agree with this .. If the Dj is killing the Dance floor with his style, he should adapt to the crowds needs. And its not always the promotor's fault or responsibility for what the dj's will play..

The best example. i was mixing at this party one night, and i started off with some techtrance music, right after a full-on Dj.. The crowd was cut down to at least one forth of what it was.. and it had nothing to do with off beats or bad, crappy tunes.. They wanted full-on.. , so after about 30 mins of techtrance, i switched to full-on.. not Britny spears or backstreet boys here people, full-on.. and they all got right back into it as if before was break time.. made me smile, and i kept mixing my favorite full-on tracks, not taking requests..

I have mixed feelings about that statement. Here in San Francisco there are lots of full on djs, and a several of the darker style djs. There are even fewer techtrance djs. I go to parties and I hear a lot of the same full-on tunes from all of the djs. (Good bad or indifferent) Personally this does bother me.

As a dj I want my style to be unique and play stuff that the general partygoer wouldn't hear the weekend before or later on that night. For me music wise any party is supposed to tell a story and I feel that the music should flow so that everyone can find something that they want to dance to, even if it is one particular song. Also here there are lots of partygoers that pay attention to what djs play and form their loyalties by what the djs play.

If for instance I was playing at a party where the crowd was loving the full-on djs and I got up to play, then some in the crowd would be prepared to go sit down. This is because they know my particular style and it might not work for what they are into. However, the people that are sitting down for all of the full-on djs will get up immediately because they know my style and enjoy that sound. Now if I were to see the full-on dancers loving the music and I decide to play a bunch of full on just for them, that isolates the darker fans and to an extent has an impact on what people expect of me when I play.

Now I do make a compromise however... I start by playing some stuff that isn't as dark as what I normally play, easing the full-on lovers into the dark, and warming up the dark lovers into the madness that will ensue. My logic is, that if my set slowly gets darker and heavier, the people that are full-on lovers might actually still be dancing because the transition between the music styles were very subtle. I have a few specialty tracks that start in one mood and end up in another, thereby still imposing my taste upon the crowd, but not allowing it to be a major culture shock.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.
