Today I noticed on my psytrance CDs that many of them say:

"Unauthorized copying, public performance, broadcasting, hiring or rental of the recording prohibited."

DJs are not allowed to play CDs at parties, or make a backup copy. I spent alot of money on CDs but I just notice this now. This is really upsetting... not that it will stop me from playing, but I thought that instead of downloading mp3, I had the right to play if I pay and support artist/label.

Can anyone clarify??

i had a very intersting exchange of e-mails with a well known psy label, and this was one of the questions i made.

they've told me they don't ask any money for tunes played during parties, so if accidentally (i would rather say luckily) you're playing a tune, released from neurobiotics for exemple, and mister boss neurobiotic is besides you he won't sue you for unauthorized public performance, but anyway that doesn't mean they will write on the cds (they live thx selled cds, remember this insignificant particular), do the fuck fuck you want to, copy, broadcast, perform in public.....we just don't care about having bankrupcy, so ENJOY....

the psy scene has it rules which are little different from scenes which don't have such an underground character: do you imagine TIP records paying people to go around all parties in the world to check if anybody is performing they releases...?!?!?!!....unreal situation.

the meaning is i offer you a sigarette if you ask me in the street even though i don't know who you are, but i won't anyway walk around with a t-shirt saying: i offer cigarettes don't hesitate!!!!!

about safety copys: you should better investigate the meaning of "unauthorized copying", maybe the personal safety copy isn't technically "unauthorized copying"

if any of the labels in this forum could explain how they work would be nice

bye

well actually i can't cuz we dont have theese restrictions. but i can tell u what i think..

All big labels like sony music, virgin has it on their cd's and also the ones who gives out dvd and videotapes.
Its all a commercial thing and i really dont think the psytrance label who put this on their cd's actually thought about it themselves.

I think they just copied the text from the bigger labels without even read it first cuz it "looks good".

Anyways this is just what i think

i think it's used mostly to make sure if someone who actually plays with big $$ wants to use a track (like for a movie or a commercial), the label will get royalties.

I doubt anyone's gonna go after some "big-name" psy DJ who is barely making ends meet, playing to a few hundred folks somewhere in the middle of the friggin nowhere.           ..it's just another party..

In Belgium we have this organisation called sabbam :

when you give a party you have to pay them for playing music in public.... In theory you should also give them a list of tracks that you are going to play.... and they will pay the artist afterwards (if their music is registrated).... since this never happens (tracklist) I have no idea what they do with the money....
they also check for backups etc....

sabbam can be really expensive 100-1000 euro .... It's really not fair but if you don't pay and they find out they shut down the party or you will get a fine ...

we should make a list of artists/tracks that are registrated .... so we don't have to pay for nothing.....

Like Lepton said, it's not the DJ's responsibility to pay, but the organizer of the party.
If any of the sets contain any track that is registered with a copyright organization you have to pay the fee or risk a fine.

A cd that is registered should have the logo of the copyright organization on the CD/Cover.
A few labels is not registered, but funnily enough still have the restrictive copyright notice.
Theat means that you infact have to contact the label and ask permission before playing their music.

In Sweden a DJ at a club or party don't have to hand in a list. The money from those kind of events get split on the top selling club tracks.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

Hmm...
From what I know in the U.K. is that every club/bar/venue has a public performance license... this means that any DJ playing there is allowed to play the tracks because the venue itself is allowed to have the music played there.
Any music played should (theoretically) also give the artists royalties...
