I think Edo is an anti Tracklisting Activist, he'll correct me if i'm wrong,
i can see the sense in that, not every dj wants to reveal his secret weapons...           http://www.aero-groove.com

hi edo
that's something that always refrains me from listening to the mix (or most mixes without tracklist)
actually most famous djs (chris liebing, oliver huntemann just to name a few) are not afraid to post their top 10 or tracklist.
You should consider that most people here in this forum are part of the public and aren't all famous djs travelling around the world in most big festivals, and the fact that they can actually get the music they like on beatport is a nice thing, in the end you are the one playing the tunes on stage.
so I have a few problems with that kind of dj elitism (no offense though, but let's call a cat a cat) that consists in not posting the tracklisting of the mix
it reminds me a bit of the "unreleased" wave that happenend in the trance scene few years ago, and it's kinda spreading around these days...feels like " you can taste it but you can't get it".
but that's just my opinion, didn't intended to bother you with that nor to be a pain the ass, but just to react on that matter and maybe open new possibilities ( tracklist maybe?? )
please consider myself as a tracklist activist... just doin' his duty
cheers mate

It was a nice pro tracklisting speech man..

I totally understand what you say and agree to the most, but... If I ought to put a mix there, in which I use my newest purchases from Beatport, I think I wouldn't post it either. Some ppl spend a lot of time and money digging into shit loads of tracks and find those that are special for them. I think this is good to keep your style to yourself, and if someone really wants to know about certain track, it's cool to tell, but to put it online like that, for people just download it from the net, in a way it flashes the energy you invested in searching it down the drain.

Correct me if I am wrong

Good points man, it's and interesting conversation!           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

héhé, indeed you are right. I had forgotten that side of the coin, the whole "dj search" thing.
fair enough, I surrender and will download without tracklist

Hey guys
Olivier, you are right in most of your points. What you say about people publishing top 10s and tracklist in mixes are right, but they do post tracklist in mixes they release or on promotional mixes made mostly for "commercial" purposes, but try go ask them for a tracklist of a set they play in a party or club. I tried asking for few tracks sometimes to big names and, well, happens that you don't even get the name of the artist!
Not posting a tracklist has not to do with the unreleased thing I reckon. That was pure Ego, people showing they can get tracks you can not get for the next few months. As you say, you can taste it but can't have it. Here is you can taste it and you can have it, just need to dig! I would never use an unreleased track in a mix I put online, not even a track someone else bought and gave to me (except very few occasions). But if you are a dj you should find your way and your own style, if you are just a music lover you don't really buy music on beatport for your collection, but prefer to have lot of good mixes on your iPod and your computer. Dj elitism as you say exist, and djs have an Ego of course. All activities that put yourself somehow on a different level of people around you help creating your ego, but not posting a tracklist has nothing to do with that. My Ego as a dj is (and I reckon is the same for all djs) that I like my music better than most of music i hear around. Actually I started djing thinking that my taste in music was better than lot of djs I heard. I'm not saying is true, but my Ego told me that, and still tells me that, but I'm sure is a normal and common thing of all djs, singers, piano players... I think all kind of artists have their ego made of their ideas of being really good in what they doing.
Not posting a tracklist for a mix I made 1 week ago, with music I bought in the last 45 days, just makes me sure that, when I get booked to play on stage, as you say, the dj who play before me (not all, but many ppl here are djs) doesn't play my same stuff, not because my stuff is better than any other, but just because it takes me lot of time (not saying about how much I spend on music) and energy to find what I really like and to create my style. And also not talking about other djs, I like to surprise people with music they don't know (again don't see it as the unreleased story).
As I said I wouldn't have any problem if you send me a message "hey mate what's the track at 27'13" of your mix?". I would be happy to tell you name, artists, label etc, but on the other side I know there will be few people who would just get on beatport (or, in worst case, on peer to peer) and get most of the tracks of the mix if I publish the whole tracklisting, vanishing the effort and the time i spent looking for music that fits a style that is just mine. This is one of the reasons why i'm enjoying more and more playing this kind of music, it gives you freedom to experiment, there is a huge quantity of music you can get and it all sounds different, while most of trance (including the unreleased killers ) sounds all the same. It gives you the chance to be a dj different than any other, having your style, your own music and your own mixing technique.
Yuli exactly got the point of what I'm trying to say here.
Anyway, yes is an interesting discussion, I was meaning to post something about this already but you guys have been quicker!

Peace

thanks for the long explanation edo!
very good points you made; the ego explanation is very true indeed
as for the famous djs, they also often publish their top 10s in magazines or over the internet ,but indeed as you mentioned, most of the time I guess these tops are not their latest ones and may be 2 or 3 months old
Yuli already had me convinced , but you just finished me héhéhé
damn anti tracklisting activists, they're good

Hey Olivier,
nice to see you got the point.
I would be happy to publish a top 10, but i'm sure that only maybe 2 or 3 tracks of it would be on the mix, being a mix not about the "killers" but about the flow (that's how i see it).
Anyway, I hope you like the mix, and I would be happy to hear what you think of it....
