cold spring
staalplaat

some good groups:
nightmare lodge
raison d'étre
i burn
caul
ever had
lord lloigor
schloss tegal

you can get free mp3 album from schloss tegal here, it's not great quality, but it's listenable:

Excellent groups!

I've just discovered Raison d'Etre lately, and I'm really fascinated by their music.
They remind me of Necrophorus, Subterranean Source and Robert Rich.

Try some of Zakir Hussain's music, I believe it's amazingly beautiful and special.

cheers.

Yeah, when I read "Dark Ambient" Current 93 was the first band that I thought off... Maybe Howden/Wakeford is worth checking out too...

vidna obmana - spore , is a great droney, grindy , industrial, ambient masterpiece.

Databloem - Ambient Explorations and grooves (2002)

and, ollie olsen has an album out on psyharmonics i think, very spooky and wierd drones and textures.

and Pete Namlook / FAX label has so many amazing releases, but some arent that good, you must check out www.2350.org they have all the fax releases reviewed. my favorites of his might be 2350 broadway, fires of ork 2, virtual vices 2, VRS MBNT PCS 2 and more i cant think of right now.... some are dark but all are intelligent and very well produced, more on the idm/ambient flavour.

good luck!

Try the Steve Reich Remixed compilation for some beautiful reworkings of the neoclassical nuttmeister.

For dark twisted ambience try some of the recent warp releases like Brothomstates and LFO (album title Sheath).
Good less well-known english acts are:
RLF (cleancut records)
Bronnt Industries Kapital (cleancut records)
Asteroth(cleancut records)
Knowledge of Bugs (cleancut)
Wevie Stonder (skam records)
Cylob (rephlex)
Astrobotnia (rephlex)
Provid (Tic Trix)

Skanner (Scannerdot Productions, a personal favourite...dark twisted percussionless soundscapes including things like the time-compressed sound of green peas defrosting try the album which I think is called 52days or 52 somethings...)

Finally the pick of the bunch must be Tipper Surrounded which has featured in many a recent discussion on this board. A perfect balance is struck between the edgyness of Autechre &co and the blissed out ambience of the trance chillout regulars.
