Looks like I'm not the only one doing the Haterade keg-stand.

When a crappy sample comes along like the one about 5 min into the first track on BlackAndWhite's album last year (SOMETHING FOR YOUR MIND, YOUR BODY, AND YOUR SOUL!!) my friends and I stop dancing, throw our arms up in the air, look at each other and yell "CRAPPY SAMPLE ALARM!!!! AUUUGGGGHHHH!!!"

Seriously though, the only time samples are even close to okay, is if they have at LEAST one effect on them, they don't last longer than five seconds, and they are not the basis for the track.

An example of a good use of a sample is in U-Recken's "Tania 2006 Edit" where they use the consonant "D" at the beginning of the sample as a rolling piece of percussion, leading up to the sample itself.. and it always is a big plus if the sample follows the same cadence as the segment of the track it is in.

Meta, we talked about this at Mythology, and if I remember correctly, only samples having to do with Matt Groening creations are allowed free reign...

dangerously low levels! -- haha that one about chips? right? I played that one at the Chinese new year. NOW THAT shit is funny! or at least strange enough to warrant use in my book. Is that the one? I think it is....

lol did you guys miss out on the Matrix samples? that was a few years back, but oh boy did they get on my nerves..

this is a bit off topic, but track #3 on Nuance, released in dec 2006 on Iboga, is def. the best use of matrix samples i've heard to date.. great track

When samples are played more than once in a track that typically drives me nuts... but it depends on how the sample is used... what fx are on it etc etc

Let us commit to fading the memory of: "Mutation, it is the key our evolution...". God Bless Patrick Stewart!

wow

seriously though, this shouldn't be some great epiphany or anything, samples have been sucking for years and years...seems psytrance artists are too hung up on american pop culture

Terrence Mckenna:
i know this is psytrance, and mckenna was a psy head. i am familiar with his spiritual, enlightenment, existential, origin of life, consciousness philosophy.
personally, i think he really was onto something. i've heard many of his speaches, i've read SOME of his material. i respect McKeena.
when Simon Posford sampled him in his shpongle project, it was cool, done well. in fact, Posford knows how to sample fresh, original material in his songs.
but since when did that become the standard?
of all philosophers in the world to sample, McKeena seems to be the focus.
i mean seriously, at this point when i hear his voice (its very distinct) i practically tune it out already.
please, lets get original people!

Personally, I don't think there is enough terrence mckenna samples out there. Especially since his library burnt down last month with all his journals and personal rantings; I want to hear whole tracks dedicated to the guy

More Terrence!

Something like that should have been safeguarded!!! How tragic!

Id say anything from the Matrix, except for that 9 West track on Iboga's Nuance, that was a pretty good use of that sample, unfortunately its been killed already...

Likewise, that damn "to an artificial mind all reality is virtual" sample from the Animatrix... Yeccch.

Anything from any big-name overproduced Hollywood shit-movie.

Except for Chromatone and Random-Alien Hunterz, those samps from Alien Vs Predator were pretty cool.

Which reminds me, that OTHER AVP sample, 'Sacrificial chamber".... Ive heard it in prog, fullon and dark songs...

Someone ought to make a DB of all way-too-common samples, so producers can avoid using the same samples...           .

my main gripe is with samples from SAW, SAW2, SAW3

its so played out hearing this guys scruffy voice in songs. its mad corny, and there are songs still being released last month that use this samples from this damn movie.
