I don't think permission is any harder to get just because your record will only sell 3000 copies, it might just be cheaper! FBS probably had to give 50% of the publishing for Bird of Prey to The Doors or whoever.

most of the time a remixing artists label asks the original artist label for making a remix, and its closing in the labels level, sometimes the artists who is remixing can go to a label and ask it for himself.

basicly the deal seatled between the original artist and between the remixing artist uppon what they think is right for them.

a remix written all over again with same sounds so it is a new production, but it has originaly written by other artist, so the original artist get mechanical rights royalties and the remixing artist get the copyrights royalties and the advance is splited between them.
but its nor black or white, it can be in other ways too, but this is the most common one.

Colin,

Basically ( in an ideal world ) u r right... but fact is that Oforia made very very nice remix to a track from Pink Floyd and didn't get the authorization due to the reasons I told b4 - he wasn't famous enough / selling enough for the major that represents Pink Floyd. Sometimes daemons better to b left alone, than awakened, coz when u do wake 'em up and they refuse, then your work is lost and will be left in the drawer for good - which is also nice and romantic but still..           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

Yuli,
Fair enough, you have a good point. I am an idealist, that's true!
