Concept of Donations Vs Entry Tickets

I wasn't getting personal....
However, we do "free" parties, here in the uk, and occasionally ask for donations.
IME, as others have said, people tend to be a bit "tight" with their cash...forgetting that we have £25K of soundsystem plus lights, truck, decor and supporting stuff. They also forget the need to chip in and help set up, clear up and they forget about the effort invovled in finding the sites and the effort by the DJs, many of whom make their own music to play for the crowd to dance to.
Now I'm not really complaining...we go into a party with our eyes wide open...We know how much (roughly) it will cost in fuel and "consumables"...We also understand how to run the rig and the lights so we don't damage anything, even if running off small generators.
But we can't budget for the occasional seizure of equipment by the police (it does happen from time to time)...
We put on free parties cos we love partying ourselves and we enjoy seeing people having fun!
We are also fortunate enough to be able to hire our equipment out to promoters and that (along with doing some pay-parties of our own) pays for the storage and upkeep of the equipment and the running of the truck.
But it isn't always like that...This year, for example, we have done less free events than we would have liked and that was partly due to lack of finances...If we could have counted on a bit more in donation money, or indeed had those donations been better last year, we could and would have done more...
And actually, if we are doing a "free" party, then we would never exclude someone because they had no money...and neither would any of the party promoters I know (and I know plenty)...However, if those same people are then queuing up at the bar having just pleaded poverty at the collection round, it doesn't put a good vibe on the party.
Also, if we hire a club to throw a party in, I take the view that the small admission charge is payable by everyone...Otherwise I (or my partners) end up paying for other people to have fun...Where is the respect in that?  Fushion Soundsystem

I would have thought it was obvious, but will explain.
Putting on a party costs money, sound system, gennies, flying in acts. etc.
If we charge you an entry fee, we take on responsibilty for your safety etc. no matter how much of an idiot you are. that means we need to have security men @ $30 an hour, ambulance on standby, public liability insurance (now we are talking real money), now we are looking @ say $35 a head instead of $10 for no perceptable improvement in the party experience. not to mention that the authorites now know in advance where the party is, expect police road blocks, body searches, sound like a fun night?
Or we can ask for a donation, private party, mates 21st whatever, grew a bit big, you take responsibilty 4 yourself.
Also no-one wants to deny people who genuinely cant afford to get in, but so many people scam us so we get a bit tough sometimes just to see if u are genuine.
If you really cant afford entry come early and help set up, stay late help clean up, do it once, we wont forget you. but if you roll up @ 11.30 in ur $300 spacetribe pants, bottle of Moet in one hand telling us you cant afford it dont be suprised if we tell u to fuck off.

mate if its a free party i dont think the big shot artist wuld be getting paid.
