Can you wise guys give me some advice about when to use (and when NOT to use) the CDJ effects (Jet, Zip, Wah)?
It also would be interesting to got tips about how to combine these CDJ effects with some equalizing tricks.
I used the search and found nothing on this subject.
Respect!

DJs like Dimitri Nakov use them for a very short time, and it adds a really polished touch to his mixes. For example, when changing from one track to another using Wah for 1 or 2 seconds on the track that is going out.
I know some people know how to use them. First want to learn how to use them properly, then I will decide if I'll use them.

Well, hereīs my thoughts about it:
-Jet: good to use on "rising" moments, or maybe in some short part(specially when U cut the bass of the track, so this is the time to use the Jet). Donīt like so much this fx...
-Zip: this one is little bit more interesting. Cause it has a "speed up/down" feeling, but in fact it doesnīt affect the pitch of the track. So sometimes u can "tune" two tracks with this fx, or also "reinvent" some loop to put in tracks. I like it, but I need an extra cdj to make this, as Iīm not so fast to change the cd and blablabla....
-Wah: this is the button I like to use to mix the tracks. When mixing with this I usually donīt use the mixer eq. So, to do it: first u need to use the "hold button". Letīs say Deck A is playing. U are hearing Deck B on phones. Now play the deck B on the phone(be sure Deck A and B are beatmatched). Now , on deck B, turn the jog to make the sound "fxed". And then open the chanell. Now all u need to do is opening deck B "wah-jog", while closing deck A "wah-jog".
Just to mention a little difficult: U canīt adjust the pitch using the jog when using the fxīs(cause if u turn off the fx, the track will have a gain). U need to use the pitch itself: letīs say both are on 0.0, and u need to slow little bit the deck B, but only for a while(like the jog). Just put the pitch to -0.2 for moment, for example, and go back to 0.0. Got it???
ps: Oracle album on the way!

cdj effects are so yesterday
Anyways, use effects, shorty on one track during the mix.
For example, you are in the middle of a long mix, all channels are open, both tracks are running and one of them is going into a 1 bar break while the other is still running strong but with the low all cut down. This could be a nice moment to add a nice filter sweep or a bitcrusher to the track without the break.
Another cool thing is to beatjuggle with the delay

A bit of wah in the mix can smooth things out. These standard effects are a bit poor, however. Don't overuse them, especially zip.

The good CDJs (800 and 1000) don't have these effects anyway, and you should be using those.
Is there a dry-wet/intensity knob in addition to the jogwheel? I can't imagine using a phaser/flanger effect without a dry-wet knob
When I use flange I usually start all the way dry, turn towards wet while turning the bass EQ down, then turn back towards dry while turning the mid EQ up, and then snap the two EQs back to the middle on the 1. There are a bunch of variations of this but that's the easiest one.

My favorite effects to use are the Roll and crush on the djm-800. There's pretty much never an inappropriate time to use the Roll, and crush is a great way to transition a track out in a pinch. |
