Buying Music - Labels or Artists ?

When you buy your music do you give more importance to which label its being released on or what artists appear on it?

For me a reputation of Labels dont matter even 1% during a purchase... it purely depends on the artists appearing on the V.A. but many a time I see people loyal to some labels and purchase everything they release.

Which one is it?

well, then how will you discover new names if you buy based on artists?

Let's say everybody who loves Iboga's style also know its quality. So why not to buy some unknown artist released by that label?!

Or Aleph Zero. Best around in chillout/downtempo. Any release is a pearl jam.

Or HOMmega fans..and so on.

So to me, it's not always an artist.

Labels are the entities responsible for choosing which artists will be on their releases... So labels are important, and some of them you can even trust.

I usually buy music only after listening to the samples or reading reviews by people with good taste or by some strong friend (with good taste) recommendation.

Sometimes I bought digital releases, and I had the option of buying from the label or right from the artist, and I choose to buy from the artist.

Indeed. Knowledge of label habits and artist capabilities is merely one vector by which quality music can be identified.

Quality of music cannot be know unless you buy the album first.

Cause even the greatest artists sometimes have there mediocre tracks.

Yes. You have a good point there and I agree to it somewhat.

For me there is one label like that - Space Boogie Recs. and till now what has been released is beyond quality music, its super fresh. and since those 2 releases I'd buy anything blindly from them unless they release 2-3 albums that dont do that well.

As for new artist recognition, I dont agree that only good labels bring in super artists in the scene. Infact many BIG labels (wont name any) take in new comers who make good relations or contacts with that label and slowly get their music to be released on that. Which is one of the reasons i posted this cause many a times I bought a V/A off a great label and the music in there turned out to b very forgettable at the same time there are some brilliant artists working with small labels or releasing just digital music and through word of mouth you get to hear bout them and they are GEMS!

Booooom.

well both,
i'll give an example,
Carbon based Lifeforms, i luved thier album so much that i found which label relesed it, found the label & hence found a sea of other artist which i luv now.
so now i dont give a fu*k which artist it is, i buy everything from Ultimae Rec.

so conclusion they both are complementry to each other (for my buying i.e.)

a very relative question!
There are some artists that I would just buy for the artist (like Aes dana) ho never fail to impress us with every new release, and some compilations for the label and some just after a review!
Nothing is said that has not been said before.

Hey guys,

I allways get a newsletter from labels and web shops than i browse for clips and check them out without any care which label is and who is performing on it. If i notice at least 3, 4 good tracks ( with a nice vibe ) and of course with a perfect sound i buy it for sure. Nevermind which label is and who is performing on it. More young artists i owe on the CD i just bought, even better ( fresh ideas and hot prospect )

Relative question indeed. In fact its a combination of both for me. For me atleast there are the top tier labels who almost never screw up or very rarely screw up - Parvati, Sanaton, Insomnia, Vertigo etc. I buy their CD's blindly just out of faith, respect & support. With regard to the rest of the labels the artist line up means everything, 4 minutes of low-quality samples are never enough to decide IMO. Very few labels have been able to deliver consistent quality & keep the bar raised. Most labels end up slacking gravely at some point along the course. Just my opinion : )

a record deal is what every artist, maybe not every, but most artist strive towards. some get em some dont, but its like a benchmark...something sought after, if an artist get signed with a big label he benefits more than what he or she would independently...yes they may loose some creative freedom...but its labels that create legends...labels are the ones who bring the sound out and get the moolah. they also are the ones who kind of give a security to an artist as in a monetary and work asspect.
the whole underground vs mainstream etc is a creation of labels...think about it...how is it that once underground artists like infected mushroom, skazi, astrix, tiesto, paul van dyk etc became such megastars?? who positioned them as such? yes many detest when underground goes mainstream, but everybody likes to be a famous celebrity deep down...however much they may hate mainstream. also Marylin Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Kurt "Nirvana" Cobain, Jim Morrison, John Lennon...would be nobodies had they not been discovered by label producers .
labels contribute a lot...like its almost a 50-50 give take relationship as far label artist relation goes...maybe not 50-50 monetarily but 50-50 overall...other benefits taken into consideration including cost of being a celeb, staying in limelight etc.
All labels big and small are responsible for the musical development...were it not for labels we all would be musical wizards, banging our plates and cups and calling it music.           When death comes to your doorstep, make sure you are alive
