Another poll !

How many of you would like to be able to buy psytrance MP3s directly from your favorite artists/labels, encoded in very high quality, for example at 1 euro/track ? If you are not interested, why ?

Thanks for your answers !

Yes I also prefer proper audio, and you get a booklet.

But nothing wrong with the idea.

But what if they're selling a compil and I find only one track on it to be interesting and all the others crap           DJ Dovla | Interchill Records, Flow Records

There was a 140bpm.com, they sold MP3 tracks. Price was way less than 1$, AFAIR 0.60 NIS (15 cents) (???)

If I remeber correctly, site existed less than year...

www.apple.com itunes music store offers loads of albums this way, at a cheaper price i believe... and with built in copy protection to keep a large part of the users from spreading the files to other computers...

personally i still prefer a hardcopy though           www.psytracks.com :: Brand new website for sharing your psytracks with the world. Get a free 250Mb Artist profile, Blog and events calender!

what apple does only on a larger/free scale with no connection to a 'normal' multinational like apple.

Yes but does Apple sell underground psytrance ? I don't think so. And they sell tracks for .99c so the price is the same. Furthermore, I think copy protection sucks and that people should be free to do whatever they want with the MP3 they have legally bought and downloaded... for example you can't move the tracks you buy at iTunes from one computer to the other....

Why would anyone buy mp3s? You can get those for free.

I would buy .WAVs however... but what is a good price for one?

Well, there are several reasons !
- Honesty and wanting to support the artists you like.
- Easier, don't have to use P2P and wait for hours in download queues
- You can't find everything on P2P networks.
- You get high quality, very well encoded MP3s (for example, in our shop, all the MP3s are encoded at 320kbps using fraunhoffer encoder, and directly from the original wavs, not from cd rips ! sorry for the plug ;-)

Difficult to say, but we might look into it... Bandwidth is expensive for sure. However there are lossless audio codecs that cut the size in half approximately....

BTW I defy anyone to recognize a .WAV from a MP3 320kbps in a double blind folded test ;-) !

To all your points about why paying for MP3 could make sense: I'd rather own the CD that answers the first three points, and is more advantageous as far as the fourth one goes.

Bandwidth is indeed expensive, but the question is - would it be less expensive than printing the CD?

I understand that everybody would rather own the CD ! Of course ! However you can't buy just a few tracks from a CD and CDs are much more expensive, you have to pay the manufacturer and the distributor: so you pay more and the artists get less !

MP3 is a hard sell already, WAV at the price of a CD has virtually not a chance.

The only ones that get rich from apple's iTunes Store is Apple and the labels. The artists are as usual the loosers here. They get exactly 4-5% of the wholesale and there's not even any expenses for the labels except a little onlien promotion....

Furthermore iTunes Store is not even legal since Apple Computer signed an agreement with Apple (Beatles company) years back agreeing never to conduct any business within the music business. Apple/Betales have now filed a lawsuit against Apple computer and mark my words... Apple Compter will loose big time.

The idea of selling music online is cool but how are the small artists (or even the bigger ones for that matter) surposed to make people aware of their webhops? They dont have money to promote themselves and I doubt that many if any will buy directly from them anyway!

2nd there's the whole deal about audio quality... I doubt you'll find many artists that want to use countless hours and investing money in making their sound as near perfect as possible just so they can release their music in a less sound quality as intended. After all artists want people to experience their music the right way - the way music is intended to be listened to.... In full quality - NOT as a compressed clone of less quality.

So as long the majority of people out there behind the screens still suffer from outdated isdn/adsl connections I seriously doubt you'll see many artists establish private webshops

As I said the thought is ok - reality is very different !
