Hello everyone

I'm using now only software synths and would like to add to my studio new analog synth

I'm looking for something simple , mainly for basses and for good sources to process via ableton to make FX parts .

My cheaper options are : Korg Monotribe(+ Mod for midi I/O ) , DSI Mopho rack or Waldorf Rocket .

On the more expensive side there are : Moog Slim Phatty the new Moog Sub Phatty or Moog Minitaur , Arturia MINIBRUTE or the new MS20 mini .

What would you do in my position . Buy cheap nice analog synth and learn it inside out or invest right away in more expensive one that will probably satisfy my need for longer period ? And which one would you choose?

Thanks in advanced to all

I was in the same position as you and I chose the MS-20 mini. I am very happy with my decision.

It depends on what you want. Do you want a lot of knobs or patch cables to fuck with? Do you want integration with ableton? etc

For instance the Mopho rack will interface more directly with ableton but has almost no knobs,

ms20 has a lot of knobs but no integration

the moog sub phatty is absolutely fuckin awesome sounding, if I had the money I'd buy one of those in a heartbeat but it was $400 more than the MS-20 that I didn't have.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

studio electronics boomstar if you have the cash ,personaly i think these are maybe the best sounding of the newer mono with the new sem and frXs both priced higher boomstar also offer good modulation possilbity to me it really look like a winner..good features, good sound..

ms20 for the price could be nice depending the built quality/ noise ect.. but sound is great too

slim phatty sound great too..but i would go for the boomstar moog insteed for a bit more cash..

for bassline moog stuff is great imo cause of the darker sound and tick low/mids but almost any synth listed there could make good bass i m sure.. you just need more tha one flavor depending the mood !

Unfortunately I don't have boom star dealer in my country , beside the 900$ for the synth there will be around 100-200$ shipment cost + around 200-300$ taxes .

It will cost much more than I should pay for

Out of all the synths you listed, I would buy the SubPhatty.

VCO phase re-trigger.
Lots of knobs.
Basic, but well thought out mod matrix that will cover a lot with regards to FX patches.
Brilliant distortion/waveshaping.
Two fantastic sounding VCOs.
One (although limited) brilliant sounding VCF.

BUT, I would wait for the rack version of the SubPhatty. I don't need keyboards + studio space is getting seriously small now. + I like racks more.

My local synth guy said he doubted they would release a sub phatty rack (as I too mentioned I would be waiting for that) as it would likely tank their Minotaur sales. I hope he's wrong.

That distortion + hard sync is fuckin glorious.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

I use the hard sync and overload on the slim phatty lots for leads. Being able to have a MIDI synced S&H generator to the slave VCO frequency, is one of the things that makes me love the slim, so much. Moog gear is expensive, but it sounds so damn nice!

With regards to a SubPhatty rack version, Moog being typical, Moog, will release a rack bersion when Minitaur sales reach their goals and hold steady. Then out of nowhere the rack version will pop up, like the Slim did.

Thanks to everyone for posting

I decided that I'll invest extra cash and get one of the more expensive ones .

I saw in my local music shop the ms20 mini , the keys feel really cheap and the nobs little bit woobly , but had not time to test the sound yet .

Also need to demo the MINIBRUTE but I heard lots of demos of the SUB and the Slim Phattys and I'm in LOVE

I can get Slim for around 550$ , the Sub goes new for about twice the price .

I'm really don't know if its worth to invest 450-500$ and get the Sub .

What do you think ?

From my small experience at my bro's studio the slim sounds lore traditionally moog whereas the sub has a very raw sound to it. I love the rawness, gives all most a punk feel when playing it. I'd def go the sub.

Personally though I'd save even more & get something that will give you complete unique sounds like the Pittsburgh Modular Foundation 2.0.

I considered this but I'm building a custom eurorack system instead.

If this is to much if there's a modular dealer near you a basic system can be built for under $1K but you'll want more later on.

dont forget bass station 2.. maybe you could get this and a ms20 or a slim.. try to cover the most synthesys technics (ring/syncro/fm/pwm/am/osc type/filter types ect)

what are you prefered sytnhesis tricks ..for example if you love fm..would be sad to get a synth that can t fm vcos..it s will make you buy a other synth later juste cause of this..

The Minitaur and SubPhatty sound more traditional Moog than the Slim for sure. The Slim is fuzzy especially in the low mids, it lacks bite (but you know you add an EQ later on and boost the top end/drop the low mids) and it will sit in a modern mix just fine.

The SubPhatty can do basic type of FM. The LFO goes well into the audio range and can track the keyboard apparently. Similar to when you used one of the VCOs of the Minimoog/Voyager for FM, it just not goes that high.

A Pittsburgh modular at the same price will have a lot less features (and sound, imo), but you can build your way up later, its just going to cost all your money, for the rest of your life. Like a crack habit. If you can afford it, go modular for sure. If this is an amount of cash you're going to have now, yet not have any money to spend for a while, go with something like the SubPhatty.

If I did not have a Slim Phatty and a Minitaur, I would be all over it already.
