well it is sounds a little stupid but i still think that alot of artist making it mostlly for the money and the labels too. and i dont think i need to feel bad when i download music, i do it to hear the music and if i like what i hear i go and buy it.
i dont know how is it in uk but here new cds cost more than they r really worth and if there is one track on entire compilation that i like i wont go and spent the money on a shit cd(allready have too many originall cds  )! |

yes, if i'm paying for music that i will play at gigs, then it MUST be 320kbps MP3s done with lame, or a lossless format. this is where the current online services fail for people who value sound quality! i will never pay for MP3s that are 192kbps or below, as (from experience) they sound weak to me LOUD.
BTW- i made the leap to a laptop rig this year, and i will never go back unless absolutely necessary. once i buy a CD, i can rip it to WAV or MP3, edit it, re-master it, and then play it using Traktor DJ. vinyl is still the best format ever for DJing, but it is dead in this scene. between CDs and laptop, laptop easily prevails. for the price of one new Technics CD deck, you can get the laptop i use, then you just have to buy the software and soundcard.
people say CDs aren't doomed in dance music, but i think they are. dance music is created on computers, and it makes no sense to burn it to CD, then use CD decks to mix. it makes far more sense to mix the files directly from a computer. |

people are never going to buy only originals
but one day hopefully there will be more than 2000 odd individuals world wide who buy trance
shame really cause even we get 2000 people at parties

people have different opnions on things some mite agree some mite NOT*....NOTHING CAN BE REALLY DONE ABOUT IT.....
but definately by buying the cds you love......does support the scene and also you can show your love n respect to the artist you prefer.
its not about buyin MORE or LESS......but its about BUYING something you really LOVE........

I just don't get what all the fuzz is about...
Can't really say that i personally care much about the 100-200 $ you MAYBE get after a year or two after releasing a track on a comp as an artist. If your a group with some members it really turns out to nothing.
So yes I make underground music and can't expect much monetary gains from it, so what to do.
I have been on 6 comps and two albums since 96.
That gained me about $1000 net so far.....then I'm still owed another $2000 since a couple of years which includes payments for one album + mastering and gfx for a couple of comps...
Take swedish taxes off that as well and again it's nothing....
I don't see the point in supporting lables in their current form, and thats what you end up feeling like you do...
A labels function nowadays should be to promote the artist to get gig's, host their music for them and help with mastering.
For that they take a management fee from the artist for booked gig's.
Open source music is the only way for the underground, ppl want to listen before they pay and don't like obtrusive protection.
So just get your music out there and let people enjoy it, and get some gig's where they fun and money is anyway.
Give up changing reality to an outdated business model, and find way's to make business in the reality of today instead.
Personally I don't care much about making business with my music, but I am just finishing a site that will be providing a quality listening interface, and high-rate mp3 downloads with music from various full-on and ambient projects. Of course only with permission from artists.
The contents will be vetted and professionally mastered before posted.
I will provide URL in this forum of course when it's ready.
ps. anyone that feels sorry for struggling artists is more than welcome to make donation....just msg mee .... nope that would not happen, but just a thought for downloaders with a heavy consciense...

Wise words spindrift..I think labels should try to promote the artist more in certain ways. Only places i see are in this forum, psynews and those banner things on the psyshops in the net. Would be nice to hear what the labels has done to promote their artists. |
