I'm just not if you would really make anything until the synth repair part started getting going. Not taking much risk but being so you won't make much money.
Figure 20% markup is going to be a razor thin profit margin after rent, taxes, insurance..Seems like the type of store that is so cool when it opens but you know isn't going to stay open long.
Seems to me here that music stores basically live off lessons with guitar center and ebay.

theres a double dip recession in USA..it will be successful but u will have to be patient..unless there is WWIII which the likelyhood seems favorable to many countries and unfavorable to many others..unless countries like north korea iran cuba etc go for open markets thereby increasing global trade..the likely hood of the global economic crisis to end is highly debabtable..untill then the only solution is war..which can be very quick and give a great steroid to the economy. to avoid such russian who have supplied the nuclear fuel as an ECONOMIC counter as the likelyhood of war is in there neighbour"HOOD"..and Japan has supplied the nuclear fuel tanks to store such fuels..this economic war and your synthersizer shop are fighting for the same thing which is actually nothing..you want to sleep longer hours , eat good quality food, have 3-4 mercedes or prius if thats ur style..feed a few ethopians or just give them one joint, or ciggarette and they will do just fine..and yes the synthesizer can heal the pain as well as destroy the brain

lol, so yeah, back to the topic...

Like braininavat said, providing instruction/classes etc. seems like a good idea. If you can host your space for teachers to hold classes on synths, production, software, etc. then you could both generate interest and a market. Otherwise I would only see this as being worthwhile in and of itself if you ran this business out of a home workshop and did your business primarily online.

There are also a lot of certifications you'd need to get with this. Most people are not going to trust bringing their vintage virus to a repair place that isn't certified in repairing a virus, especially one that just started up. Conversely, having the certifications mean you are going to be actively sought after by people needing work done on the appropriate gear.

There's a store like that where I live, called The Amp Shop, which is run out of a house-turned-workshop. He primarily repairs synths and keyboards, as far as instruments go, but most of his money seems to be made from repairing/refurbishing amps, speakers, and sound systems. The store has managed to stay around for quite some time.

(Interestingly, the guy who runs it has never heard of Access Music or a Virus.)

I guess what i'm trying to say is for something like this to work, you would have to diversify and not specialize in a "niche" such as vintage synths only. i.e. Think about conducting classes or lease space out for that to others, and expand to not include vintage synths only, but other sound gear, turntables, etc.

It's a great idea for sure But the nature of the current business model is dependent on a dwindling market, simply due to the nature of time. Diversifying and/or including more current forms of audio technology might be key.

Another idea would be to work on building custom made synths and sound gear from scratch, circuit bending other gear, cases/racks/desks, etc. as then you will be offering a unique product that can't be found elsewhere.
