So I had this idea to open a vintage synth shop in Chicago. As far as I know nothing like that exists in the city. I would buy used vintage synths on ebay, repair them if neccessary and sell them at, say, a 20% mark-up. The advantage of buying it with me over ebay, obviously, would be the fact that you can actually play around with a synth before committing to buy it. You'd also be able to repair it with me. I'd be mostly targeting the local house and hip-hop scene, as well as the hipsters, of course. Here's a list of synths I'm planning to start with:

Roland:
• TR-909
• TR-808
• Jupiter 8
• TB-303
• JP-8080
• JP-800
Korg:
• MS-2000
• MS-2000R
• MS-20
• Mono/Poly
Sequential Circuits Prophet 5
Clavia Nord G2
Access Virus B
Access Virus C
Yamaha CS-80
Moog
• Minimoog D
• Memorymoog
• Prodigy
• Rogue
Alesis Andromeda

2 questions:

1) Do you think such an idea would be successful or does this sound like stoner talk?

2) What synths do you think would sell well in a city like Chicago?

EIDT: Can someone move this to the Equipment forum?

Boom Baba!

if you like to sell it here all units must play GOA, preferably dance. If in Chicago you can find real Babas then i think it is good idea. If there is no Baba then it is sad.

lol!
don't be silly man, you think that all those synths companies that make them will survive from goa hippies that make music?
on this synth you can make any kind of music, hip hop, r'n'b, rock, pop....
and musicians use them for playing and making music all the time...

hm, nice idea for sure..

just don`t give any guarantee on the units, since i can imagine that single parts are hard to get on some units..

or it would take really long to get them..          -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-

I'm not a business major, but would a 20% markup per unit cover your operating expenses - rent on the space etc?

Is there enough market out there to make a business of it? Will you be reselling online as well?

I don't know yet for sure, but my very rough calculations suggested that if I sell the stuff at 20%, I would need to sell 7 units a month to breakeven.

theres a double dip recession in USA..it will be successful but u will have to be patient..unless there is WWIII which the likelyhood seems favorable to many countries and unfavorable to many others..unless countries like north korea iran cuba etc go for open markets thereby increasing global trade..the likely hood of the global economic crisis to end is highly debabtable..untill then the only solution is war..which can be very quick and give a great steroid to the economy. to avoid such russian who have supplied the nuclear fuel as an ECONOMIC counter as the likelyhood of war is in there neighbour"HOOD"..and Japan has supplied the nuclear fuel tanks to store such fuels..this economic war and your synthersizer shop are fighting for the same thing which is actually nothing..you want to sleep longer hours , eat good quality food, have 3-4 mercedes or prius if thats ur style..feed a few ethopians or just give them one joint, or ciggarette and they will do just fine..and yes the synthesizer can heal the pain as well as destroy the brain

Where in Chicago are you thinking about? First thing you should do is some research around the area you'll be selling to see what level of interest there is.

I would hope 303's would sell well, but I don't know of a lot of people in the chicago area that produce with hardware.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Psy trance is not the only type of music produced in Chicago that may benefit from synths.

I wasn't referring to the 3 people from chicago who produce psytrance, just general acid styles           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

That's why a brick and mortar store may not work.
7 units a month is going to saturate the local market pretty quick I figure.
Better consider selling online. or if in person, by appointment out of your house. At least to start with so you don't have to get locked in on a retail space lease.

btw Imperets if this was all stoner talk to begin with, just consider this an exercise

That's a good point about market saturation. I was thinking about doing it in the WIcker Park area. So think about it: instead of buying a synth online blidly, you'd be able to screw around with it and even have a reliable repair done if needed. Besides, people that are into hardware synths like to acquire more and more of them, like a collection. I guess that's my counter-argument to the market saturation.

And again, I'm not looking at trance producers as my potential clientele, because there ain't any (which sucks). I'm looking at house and hip-hop producers. The only problem with the hip-hop people is that most of them are poor and may not be able to afford a $3000 piece of equipment. There are always people that don't produce shit, but will buy a synth just because... it looks cool or something.

make sure you get theft insurance..if i get stonned or something i might break-in or join one of those bloods or crips and rob your store..why use cash when u can hold up a store and get brownie points and community standing for doing so?
later i will make a song about it too
and become multi-platinum psyrap-
synth-playing superstar you can call me
