Having been production manager until last November for Antiworld/Psygate perhaps I can put my thoughts into this equation. I tried very hard to get through to Enrico the concept of psy-trance is for mates not for the masses... and most certainly not for a VAT registered company to claim it leads the underground (Mixmag quote - not me). I no longer work for Enrico because he has taken the best aspects of the production side and added commercial acts to the brew thinking that that is the holy grail. Meanwhile as far as 10 reasons to trip (Mixmag quote)... he wouldn't know what a trip was even it got up slapped him round the face and went 'oi here I am!!' He (in my opinion and with more insight into his character than most) is as phoney as rocking horse shit.
I have taken note of a lot the comments and views expressed and would agree with both sides but would err on the side of 'lets keep it to ourselves if push wre to come to shove'. As such these are my own views and I do not wish people to think that I believe everybody should hold the same opinion as me.
Enlightenment was probably the finest example of how a large and well organised psy-party can and should be. 1800 people in a 2000 capacity venue. Big enough to pay for the acts and cover a decent production - but still small enough to be able to find your mates because at the end of the day I still hold the belief that this is the underlying thread to the psychedelic scence - mates and your common (sometime drug induced - an undeniable fact with this scene in particular) experience/s.
So now that's off my chest and I thank you for taking the time to read this

Wait till the TV advertising industry (probably automotive, alcohol or tampon related) gets hold if it...then it'll go massively overground!

Thanks for speaking up Dave. I was hoping someone was going to speak from within that camp. I did have another thought. Not a definitive one just a bit more chat to pad out the debate space more.

At the moment most trance labels are selling between 1000 and 3000 copies of each release as a ballpark figure. If there was increased interest in the genre and more people bought the cds (say 10 000 -20 000)
The wingeing about mp3 trading might stop which would be nice. Also there might be more people who are prepared to try production as a fulltime job (see djs not live acts thread where many expressed sadness at not making enough from production to get by). What d'ya think. just more money mad scrabbling from a deprived label whore?
This might allow trance to be put on vinyl again for example which many would love to see...

What I would love people to suggest in this forum is an angle that the DJ mag girl could take on psy trance that would inform the public about what is quite a positive scene without just taking the whole thing for a media joyride.

Henry,

Mate the problem is, this is going to sound trite, when you play with fire you'll get burnt! In the case of media it works in the same way - if you publicise or use media exposure to your advantage then it has every right to explode in your face, or as you put it, take you for a 'media joyride'!

I would be inclined to take the angle that the psytrance scene is actually a scene rather than simply a bunch of people stomping around. That it links visual and audio and that there is an emphasis on the human element of raving - the community thats being constantly referred to in this thread! That may get across the idea that thraki, boom etc. are not designed solely as playgrounds for drug scouts!

Another thread mentioned that the king of morocco is a big GMS fan.

Are we at the beginning of a bizarre shake up? Will we see Xenomorph on top of the pops? Sirius issness to remix the strokes?
Or is this just a bit of collumn

I reallly hope that my previous posting did not try to give the impression that this 'thing' is ALL about drugs.... quite the opposite..... I was trying to make the point that it is more about 'mates'..... let me try to explain my 'oh so loose definition' a little more deeply.
The psychedelic scene (and I exclude no others from this) seems to work on a level of 'mates' - this can be shown to be true in as much most weekend outdoor parties are put together by a group of 'mates', one who may have sound another who may video yet another who may have decor and so on. This in my experience is generally not about 'the money' but more the shared experience (my I wish I weren't starting to sound like a bearded hippy!) and this attitude (mostly) seems to carry over into indoor event production mainly because its the same people doing the production in return for payment that normally nowhere near equates to the effort put in. Why? Because I and I think most people than I have worked alongside of carry this same basic attitude towards the 'scene'.
Hence my assertation that Enrico et al are are a bunch of phoneys because they cannot even grasp these concepts and all they do is take that attitude and wring what they can from it in effort to squeeze every last penny of profit from an event to satisfy the god that is the cash cow.
I know that I am not the only person to have suffered at thier hands and before anybody should think that this is just sour grapes on my part then feel free to mail me at davearci@hotmail.com and I will happily send you a personal mail detailing many things that i know for a fact and that if i were to post them onto a public forum would probably cause the thread to be locked and me off the forum!!

I think that many peoples within the "scene" differences with Antiworld are well documented and nothing sets off a 20 page thread like the mention of the name. I've got my own views - but back to the topic at hand...

I agree with what Dave has said about everyone throwing in what they can to make things happen within psy trance - but again this hapens in lots of other scenes that are equally ignored by the media - or have the odd bit of publicity but havent yet been eaten up by commercialisation ( a couple of pages in a specialist dance mag isnt exactly Acid House front page of The Sun coverage is it?? and lets face it - DJmag is good for record & technical reviews but not the most racy of dance mags!).

Again at the risk of repeating myself - psy trance is a special to everyone here because they are into it - but so is acid techno to the crew lugging their system to their party in the woods or D&B is special to the young lad beginning MCing at a D&B rave. Personally I think its wrong to somehow imagine that psy trance is more "special" than any other underground scene -its just more special to us

i'm particularly amused by the fact that the editor of mixmag clearly doesn;t know what he's talking about...
