...nice history...

for me, breakbeat stuff can t cause so deep trance-states like "our" music, but maybe with time it developes to a more "trancy" style...( or it already has and i didn t realized/heard it )

I've heard this "live" while deejay sets twice in my Party-Life..
Rolando (Underground Resistance) and Danilo Vigorito (The Advent) used such a trick to re-mix "Live" a track with itself, unwedging the kick to create some breakbeats....... and what a blast it have been both times !!!!

As I said it, i've heard this only twice since 1996... so I use to think it is a HighlySkilledDeejay trick

About breakbeat in general... I just loooooooove it because of the highly danceable characteristic.

i love breakbeats

favorite track is from Element over Nature, "Intra Neutral Power"

i don't have much knowledge on undergroun stuff though...

nevertheless i prefer breakbeats with at least small presence of melody (or melodic sounds)...           in search for an answer...

Heh....it sounds like we have very similar musical tastes, nectarios. I could write pages about this subject (and may end up doing so;).

I have really gotten heavily into breakbeat over the last year or two....it is probably on equal footing with psytrance for me right now. I always enjoyed the old psy-breaks from '97-'99, but I felt that the style never really had the chance to reach maturation before it sort of died. I think it was a case of bad timing and not expanding the marketing of psy-breaks releases outside of the psy/goa scene.

However, a lot of the more recent stuff that has come out of the nu-skool & prog-breaks styles has had a super-smooth near psychedelic feel to it. You mention a lot of it in your list. Silencer aka Force Mass Motion vs. Dylan Rhymes does it the best (ignoring their latest overly vocal release "Taking Hold":))....driving rhythms, layered & harmonic (but not cheesy) melodies...this stuff rips apart dancefloors. Ditto for guys like BLIM, Koma & Bones, McMillan & Tab, Elite Force, EK, Wrecked Angle, General Midi etc etc. Breaks on the dancefloor have such a nice groove and move people, either as a build to something harder or as the theme for the night.

What I am digging about much breaks released over the last year or two is how it works so damn well with a lot of the progressive psytrance (especially the Swedish stuff ala Son Kite/Ticon) and a lot of more tribal psychedelic progressive. The styles all have a similar groove and fit together extremely well in a single mix. Nothing I would play in the peak time of a psy party, but it works well in the first few hours or once things are winding down a bit.

My dream would be if some of the Swedes would follow Ticon's lead and produce some breakbeat tracks. I remember for awhile there was a mention of VSUAL Breaks on the MPDQX site, but it is gone now....anybody know what happened with that??

Do any producers on this forum experiment at all with the style? I would love to hear what sorts of funk comes from the psy-infected brain.

------------

For a little bit of shameless self-promo, I am actually soon beginning a regular internet radio show on www.eccentricbeats.com which will focus on what I mention above....breaks meets prog-psy meets tribal, etc. If anybody is interested in hearing it, send me a PM and I will make sure you get the information.

I also have a couple mixes online for download which work between the styles as well...
http://www.texaliens.org/mp3/dr_krelm_KVRX_mix.mp3 (less breaks, more prog)

Another really kickass regular breaks show to check out is the Strongarm Sessions by ShAk/Elite Force. It is 3 hours long and broadcasts every Thursday night (I think 6-9 pm GMT). No psy in it, but some of the best tunes in the genre. The info (and some archives) on that one is:

Holy shit....their track "Get Above Yourself" is easily the most psy-breaks track I have heard in years. The first time I heard it made my jaw drop completely. Have they released any other stuff since?

it`s true, at least from what i know, many trancers like other elecctronic music such as breakbeat. personaly i don`t listen to much of it these days but i`ve had a long jungle d'n'b breakbit period and it`s indeed a great genere.
all i know is that on of the best parties i`ve ever been to was a reflex rave in t-a with
d.j reflex, dmx crew, aphex twin, and mike dread(totaly hardcore). and it was f***ing amazing. can`t remember a trance party i danced so hard like this one. suffered from pain in my knees for two weeks after ... but i walked around high for a month after that rave.           if u dig deep enough u just might reach the sky...

Rock...thanks for the recommendations. I just checked out the samples and had the local store order copies for me. Absolutely wonderful tunes. General Midi is on fucking fire lately.

I don't mind vocals too much when done well...my preference is more the sparse vocal touch (ala "Believing") rather than the full out lyrical vocals. However, "Taking Hold" is growing on me every time I hear more samples and I will probably end up buying it nevertheless. That wobbly bass sound that is in just about all of their tracks gets me every damn time.

On the subject of Silencer, I just heard that there will be a full album out sometime in August. This is one to look forward to.

On a semi-related note, I just picked up the "Colours of Conscience" 12" by Jono Fernandez on Electrofly Records earlier today. My lord. It is a bit more of the prog variety of breaks, but it just has my jaw dropped when I cranked it on my home speakers. Deeply layered melodies and wonderful atmospheres.....this is the type of release that pushes the envelope of breaks & psychedelia (not dark, but psy nonetheless) - and keeps my wallet thin.

have you all checked out the stuff on Exogenic Breaks? i think there is at least one compilation.

even the Eraser vs. Yojalka album has some pretty nasty breakbeats on it.

You are absolutely right. The comp is called Complications or something like that. It is a really good CD. It is not so much in the vein of breaks like the stuff mentioned above....there is a lot of downtempo acid-jazz sounding stuff, a few d&b tracks (breakbeat but very different) and some more minimal electro-breaks tunes. But it is still an excellent release.

The Finnish and Austrialians are definitely still pushing the boundries with breakbeats. It is less what I personally would consider dancefloor material - way more abstract - but really fine music nevertheless. I was very happy to see what both Exogenic and Surreal Audio had formed sublabels dedicated to pushing their own breaks sound.

Nick Taylor is definitely one of the pioneers of psybreaks....I just wish he would play in Europe more. 2 of the best musical experiences I have had were with him at the helm. His old "Scorch" 12" on TIP Records was what finally made me see the beauty in the breakbeat. Absolutely intense song.

Nice topic......
quite funny cuz I happen to have seen Ticon last saturday and two days later soul of man, lee coombs and the plumb dj's and their breaks especially ones from the first two got me back in my psymood..... : ) though I have to admit that i never really been at any underground breakbeat party and the sphere at this party last week just wasn't comparable to any psy-party I been to.....but maybe that was bad luck.......

Shit, and I mised out Lee coombs playing here last week.

Do not forget Hybrid, they were one of the first ones to get me to listen to breaks like that.           Kinetic Honda GmbH, Worldwide Supliers of Quality noise.
