BPM/Tracklist Case Inserts - PLZ!

This is simply a plea to labels and release designers – please please please put tracklists with BPMs on an insert in your releases! I don’t know how many CDs I’ve bought lately that a) don’t have BPMs anywhere on the cover or release notes and b) don’t come with an insert for a CD book/case/wallet.

This may sound a tad whiney and of course I can always pop it in the ol’ CDJ to get the BPMs, but not having the insert kills me every time. My cases I take to shows are packed out with little slips of paper listing tracks and BPMs, and there’s something esthetically disappointing about it.

I just got a bunch of new CDs in the mail yesterday and was a bit disappointed. Nobody carries around a bunch of plastic cases around, the paper/cardboard cases don’t even have front covers that can be taken out…yeesh.

Anybody else feel my pain here? It’s minor, I know…but still.

I agree with you, a DJ slip or sleeve or insert or whatever-you-call-it is always welcome, makes my life easier and CD cases look better.

I think what you call paper/cardboard cases is called digipack, and they are even worse when it comes to this issue.

However after I start to mix in keys I kinda gave up this issue, because as far as I remember only one of my CDs came with tracks' keys, so...

But I'd rather play the wrong track than write the track names and bpms with my own hands, this would make my CD cases look soooooo bad... You know, after years of dealing with computers I have a very ugly handwritting.

So what I do is scan the cover and some other parts of the booklet and create my own personal DJ sleeve, it is a lot of work but print it on a nice thick glossy paper and the result will look pretty good.

I've always personally disliked them as too many people just look at the bpm and then assume they known what the track is about (146... oh,, full on... 138... must be prog...... etc). Proper dj's don't need them anyways so I've always seen them as a bit of a waste of paper, although I can see how younger djs might find them useful. Probably I'm just showing my bias here as I learned how to dj back in the vinyl era when such luxuries where unheard of.           New Album: Jikkenteki - Flights Of Infinity

Well BPM tracklisting is practised by few label's these days, i really dont know whats the fuss behind the slip's we have everything mentioned on the CD.

so im all fine here

If you're only worried about the BPM range, here's the solution to your problem:

hmm, if you are a decent dj you wont need the case inserts for mixing tracks. However its a cool thing to have those papers, i like em personally and its easier to catalog cds and know the tracklist instead of digging inside your memory.

As a practitioner of harmonic mixing, BPMs are very important... however, since no one bothers to write down key information, I find those little "DJ inserts" completely pointless. Once upon a time I kept them all in my binder, and sure enough, there was something aesthetically pleasing about it... but they would always end up ruined in the rough and tumble conditions anyhow, so I stopped using them altogether.

Well I don't know.... don't you have ears?

There is this strange phenomena, a trick a lot of djs use - when you listen to the track, you can ACTUALLY hear if its faster (or slower) then the one you're mixing into.

Or even a better one - if you actually practice mixing for a month or two, you will be able to beatmach without a bpm counter. Really.

So, I still don't see a point with the bpm listings.

I like the man's style lol... also I agree with him in general.

It can be nice though to see the tracklisting of the CD printed nicely in your CD wallet, although I've started printing out my own, copying the information from the CD booklet. White paper, Arial 14-point - neat and very easy to read.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering
