indeed. but let's be honest, if this didn't come from former Ableton workers, it would look like the biggest rip off of all times. even the aesthetics of the interface are closer then usual.
but what you claim is true: if some host offers you warp or flex time, rest assured every single one of them is going to come up with something similar with a different name, so as to avoid this patent/trade secret kind of deal. if Logic comes up with Amp emulations, Cubase does it after, scales on Ableton and Fruity, yeah, you got those with Logic X... could go on and on.
what I think this excels, however, is that it isn't just the sum of these good things we enjoy in other programs, but actually seems to build upon them and go some steps forward. there's some innovative ideas here, and the way he was manipulating audio in that video, even non destructively, with the same clip just different combinations on the order of slices is amazing. hybrid tracks is also a very nice idea, making this whole bounce down to audio thing much easier - one of the shortcomings of Ableton is that once you get some sidechain thing going, you can't freeze a track until you (not only bypass) delete the device, or even if this track belongs to some group. That sucks, that's not what flexibility means. And mixer wise, still miles away from Logic and Cubase. That's, again, where this is something different. Arrangement and mixer looks to offer all the options you'd expect, except for the mixer not displaying peak measurements - did anyone else noticed that? |

which other vendors release Plugins for Linux ? Or do You think teh Bitwig included Instruments and Effects are sufficient ?
|
|
if i am not mistaken there is an adapter for using windows vst's on linux...
the only problem about linux its related to hardware integration, most manufactures dont support linux, so many devices dont have drives, and the linux drives are home-brew made wich makes them a bit unstable and glitchy, thats the major problem.

the market will (have to) adapt to the new platform if and when there's enough people on the boat to make it worth the trouble - it's not quite there yet. plus, with linux you get non proprietary everything as default as opposed to blindly engaging the user with proprietary apps and plug-ins that do violate user privacy - like adobe's flash player for instance, whose lack of security is legendary even for Apple.
on the other hand, and for those interested check what Valve's been doing lately, the operating system itself is more robust, fast, stable and reliable then either mac or windows and offers better performance for equivalent tasks and the number of users seems to be rising every single day for the common user and companies - this is specially important due to Microsoft's announcement that they'll soon cease their support for the most commonly used OS in the world (guess what, windows xp).
for musicians like us, linux would mean pretty much everything the mac means to most people: no struggle with viruses, a faster and more responsive system that could mean a lot of money saving for most people specially for live rigs - much cheaper then a mac. think it's the first full daw to make it to linux and coming from people who've been there in the formation of Ableton (almost industry standard these days?) we should expect linux to become a worthy alternative for music production in the years to come and that's ultimately good for anyone - specially money wise.
downloaded the demo and will take a look when I catch some time. how's it working for you guys? |
