If you consider 909s and 303s on stage next to the decks, as DJing, then yes DAVE would be right up there.

i would certainly echo the sentiments of those who suggested ritchie hawtin.. technical skill, showmanship, and inventive originallity set him apart imho.

ditto on jeff mills, and i would also throw carl cox and laurent garnier in there for good measure!

it's interesting that so far most of the names that people have listed here are techno djs of the detroit/frankfurt persuasion?

D.A.V.E dj's as well. And he is phenomonal dj when it comes to mixing hard edged minimal and acid techno, even starting to infuese a bit of electro into his sounds now as well.

Saw him do a bloody good outdoors in November 2008, 2 cdj1000s and 2 vinyl decks, and it was a monster sets, th emixing was amazing and the track were mind boggling amazing techno sounds!

A bit old but I highly suggest getting your hands on:

That first you tube video (Jamies Zabiela) is awful. It just wasn't musical at all what he was doing. It was FX for FX sake. Music needs to flow. You need contrast, but it has to be in balance with the flow.

Why are people impressed with knob fiddlers?

Is it because it looks more interesting to watch?

hey man,

James Zabiela is a 1st class DJ. He is having everything what a good DJ should have. Touch, enjoyment i from of the people, he likes to do it, he is greatest technitian in the world regarding electronic music. Playing on 4 decks for him aint a problem, just a challenge everytime. Actually that was a movie recorded for a presentation how a good DJ shouldnt be scared to use FXs ad mixer efx..how to combine them in a track and the other way around.

He is releasing some nice tracks and dig a lot of progressive stuff...he is a man of the moment for sure. The flow stuff...there is, but hey...the flow is lost when a DJ mix up 2 tracks on each 5, 6 minutes ( like some of DJs are doing ). This aint innovative not even unique. This is DJing without balls!!

Cheers

Hey man,

That example was awful. I am not impressed at all.

Sorry if that's what he does at parties I won't be going to those parties. I am not bothered what the herd think. What he did to the music in that example was horrible and unmusical. How may items of gear he has and can use at once doesn't mean anything if the results aren't musical. Go back and LISTEN to the clip. Close your eyes, forget who it is and what toys they might have. Listen to the sound. Is it really that musical? Does it arouse you? Does it take you on a journey?

Hey man,

No offence But you must quote what i have written above your latest post Let me do it again:

Quote:

If you know the story behind this so called movie, you would understand that this movie has been recorded in promotional matters ONLY. He is a "representative" of Pioneer brand. They call him to show his skills of ( read this ) USING FXes IN ALL WAYs / so, just to show to the people how the things are working and how those things can be used by combining them at the same time.

Maybe you feel this way ( correct me if i am wrong ) because you are more into full on stage and you dont feel to use anything esle, just 2 faders and 3 knobs on each side.

For me he is a technitian and 1st class DJ. Have seen him played live several times and what to say.. he has done everything to satisfy my needs of how a good DJ should "behave".

But you must consider my post as my own opinion, as my own thinking and my own decision. This is an open forum, so each comment regarding the topic issue is wanted. But hey, i dont see you answer nowhere, just critics about how this DJ su*ks

Well, i know you will figure out a DJ name which satisfy your expectations )

lol...I never said he sucked....I said that what I heard in that clip was not musical. Please don't go and assume anything else.

If you have a good example then post it up for me to hear. My mind is open. I enjoy listening to music.

I will have to agree that the James Zabiela video really showed nothing.... all it was was a tweaking out on the fx processor, no big deal really..

now the Qbert above ^.. WOW !!
