the best ambiEnt is probably Aphex Twin (at least on an international level he is considered that), but Shpongle, Celtic Cross, u-Ziq, FSOL, Squarepusher and others can't be ignored.
It really matters what type of ambient you like (that's like asking "what's the best trance track" when people like club-trance, deep-trance, morning trance, night trance, hard trance and many other different styles of it).
Just check out all of it, it's a great style 8) |

asaf... Squarepusher is great but i wouldn't call his music ambient :)
One of my favourite ambientgroups are biosphere.. |

AmbiEnt (with an "E") is not only chill out - something people don't always take notice of.
Squarepusher is very psychedelic - and although he has a lot of DnB, Jungle and Jazz influences, he is still ambient. Not chill out ambient - he's pretty active, but still falls under that defenition - but it's more ambient with anything else.
Anyways, the consensus that Shpongle are the best that's around here shows a certain lack of open-minds here - it is amazingly well made chill out, but it's arguable if they are the best (like 99% of the people in this forum consider them). If you really are into ambient - there is so much more to it than just taking psytrance ideology and implementing it into a non-BPM based music. Psychedelia has many forms :) |

asaf, actually i think it's wrong to put squarepushers music under any specific genre since his music is a fusion of so many styles..
Oh, some great ambient/IDM I would reccomend is Scope(album) by Nobukazu Takemura .. that's some beautiful stuff.. |

And the last, brilliant, Shango album by Juno Reactor. In their case i'd say the slower the music the better {the formula which almost never works in trance music} |
