My tutorial.

I like to create deep basses, i'm kinda house producer but anyway some of you will find it intresting.

I take any analogue alike VST-i (ie. Moog, Minimonsta, Albino). Create my tune and try to filter out half range till 1000hz. Then i apply delay effect (if there is native vsti effect). Apply small amount of delay and feedback.
Now i wish to increase delay and create more constant signal coming from bassline, so i apply limiter or any other hard compression (ie. Waves Ultramaximazer, PSP packs). I move down levels of threshold and attack that way so i will hear constant deep singal from bass with minimal attack.
Now i apply kick drum and side chain trigger so i can connect bassline with sidechain to kick.
This way i get deep and constant bassline which crossfades with kick giving space to everything.
Now the time for last tweak and it's native filter of VSTi i used for bassline creation, every small change there will be maximazed and will create an instresting effect to your sound by tweaking one simple knob.

Good luck

possibly the tc native-compressor is the reason ("trial version"? ;-) ). try another one, e.g. the (free) slim slow slider side chain compressor:

http://www.ismusic.ne.jp/slim_slow_slider/vst/index.html

setup is a bit different to the tc tho.

Hi all.

First I want to say a big thank you to Mike A for this tutorial. Truly increcible and very helpful!

I have been making music for a long time, but have been agonizing over the elusive trance bass. I new it was a kbbb type thing, but it never occured to me to use really short note lengths. Also the part about SC compression, i always thought it was just kind of a nice effect, and tend to try to stay away from extra EQ and compression, but after seeing the tutorial it all made sense. I didnt realize at first it was so integral to the sound (which it is for that puslating effect).

Definitely it can be said trance has a signature sound. I have been mentally debating this with myself for half a year now. Kind of like blues uses the blues scale, and thats what makes it bluesy. On a side note, if the blues were kept an insiders circle, Jimmy Page would probably not have been able to do what he did with Led Zeppelin.

So thank you very much for sharing, and someday if I can return the favor I most defintely will. very good psy-karma here!

A request though, maybe to expand on this thread:

What is the difference between full-on bass and psytrance bass?

i spent a few hours last night as i was working through the tutorial again, re-reading this thread....

just a few things that started to weigh upon my mind inspired me to write this post. first I want to say thanks again to Mike A for writing this. unfortunately though, i think all the posts praising Mike, and thanking him probably don't weigh as heavy to him as getting razed by members of his peer group for sharing the secrets of the kingdom. somebody said too that they could do it in private if that was their intention, and it wasnt meant as such, etc. Nonetheless, i'm sorry, but i think getting criticized for something you do- in public - is much more impacting to ones esteem than having been done in private, so really everyone who criticized Mike on this page meant to make him feel bad, and act as peer pressure to punish him as to not do it again.

in fact the poor guy says, with what sounds to me a lot of frustration

Ok, I won't make any more tutorials.

Newbies, make your music alone. Open cubase and click on random stuff until you get it done.

Have a nice day.

now, i know what it is to work on something for a long time and feel pride for something you have done. i have played guitar since 7th grade, for almost 20 years now. there was a period were I was very defensive of my style, which i think is pretty unique, even to the point were i dealt some ill will to a band mate because i thought he was copping my style. this was about 10 years ago now, and i'm glad that it didnt come to much between us, because we're still friends, and conversely, i'm glad that some of my influence or vibe could be passed on to him because now i dont play as much, and also glad i could give some positive energy to help him in his path. (hey, were all wired into the same substructure, right??)

so what i am saying with all this, is the bad attitude does more damage than good. Mike was trying to do something good with this, and it has personally helped me alot, alot of other people too, it sounds like. whether or not its proper way or not is moot, because the tutorial facilites by an example of full on bass several good techniques. when i learned guitar, it always made more sense to me when learning something i wanted to play (or relevant) than some 50 year old folk song or something. the concepts stuck, and later on the folk song, although boring at the time could be appreciated more and in turn made more sense. nothing wrong with that in my book.

one simple page of material with nice screen shots, and even after reading about side chain numerous times, i always thought i was doing it wrong, and word descriptions also miss something anyway. the screenshots nailed it down. then doing the tutorial, hearing nice rolling bass, it was like the lights went on, and now I SEE!!!

ok, so i have been doing electronic music for 8 years. i'm a slow learner. good with software, but i work a full time job, and live in japan where there is not a wealth of studio coursework available in english. i have been trying to do trance for along time, and while getting some nice psychedelic elements, have had people tell me quite frankly 'thats not trance'. so i have been missing the mark and making some kind of techno/house/rock for a long time. nice and ok, but doesnt always work for parties.

this is not to say i havent put in the leg work, hours of suffering, and pulling my hair out that many of you know. just been missing some key knowledge

in fact here's a track:
http://www.anoyo.net/thedaleks/sohigh.mp3

i think its pretty original sounding, and i have never felt creativity is a problem, but i think you will admit its not trance, and also maybe not produced very well.

i think we can all admit, that we learn things from other people. knowledge is in deed power, but power is should also be shared, and i think that is the point of having a forum like this, no?

lots of other good info on this thread, too, like tying the root note to eq frequncies...

so, i know alot of this action on here is old, and many people have said their things and gone, so this may not be relevant anymore, and i also apologize for what might be the longest f***ing post in this whole thing. if it can help some people get a better attitude, then maybe its ok. for the naysayers, it always seems to be the case that it is easier to criticize someone else, than to do it. in the end, though, you just end up not looking good, so instead of saying something negative, try and do it better, or just keep it to yourself, is better imho..

Mike A, if you're still out there, I'd like to hear some of your stuff. Drop me a line if you see this. I know some distributors in Japan, maybe I can hook you up with some people (that is, if you havent already). ...and please post another tutorial someday. you have a good style, and also seem to be an insider with access to post graphics!

peace, love, and enlightenment
