you can also refer to it as "copy&paste" or "since 1999"

in one genre atleast..           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

I have to disagree with you Colin.
You're saying that "the bass is the sound that plays the bassline." but how can you define a term (bass) with something that is not a word at all (bassline)??? Bass is exactly what Rik wrote up there. Bass part is the bass' part in the track.

Baseline is so meaningful in music, it's the basis of the track, the main theme of it. A bassline is a non-existing thing; this word does not exist.

Non-existing? I don't know or care if it's ever been an official word in music, but for as long as I've played in bands, long before getting into psytrance, when we talked of the part the bass plays, we called it 'the bass line'. or 'bassline'. hardly non-existent.

in terms of music theory, as Colin sais, 'baseline' does not exist. But you can apply it to music if you like.

"Language is a virus" - William Burroughs.

A virus mutates. words change meaning. words come and go into the lexicon.

A virus requires a host. We are the host for language.

In a conversation, there's no distinction between "bassline" and "bass line". So there's no clear spelling choice. Either way there's much validity in the domain of music. Written music is usually written with lines (the staff). So arrangements are visually separated into parts, for vocals: soprano, tenor, bass, etc. A small white powdery pick-me-up-you-know-what as also referred to as "a line". In a different context, a time series (horizontal) of notes is usually referred to as "a line"- eg. lead line, bass line, multiple lines transitioning is called "voice leading"...

If enough people spell it "bassline" then eventually a new norm is set, mutation has happened.

"baseline" and, by the way, the current popular usage is spelled as one word, at least for one of it's meanings. You might see a "base line" on a basketball court. But in a statistical analysis, you'll see a "baseline" state.

As far as using the term "base line" to refer to the general concept of a track's focus, direction, development, melodic hook, or "base" energy level (usually kick/bass, in trance); I've conversed with many musical artists and we just don't use that term for that because it's too confusing with "bassline". If i'm talking about "baseline" it's usally referring to my neuropharmacological state.

But the isratrance forum people can do anything they want, we might not fully understand what you're saying, or we chalk it up as a spelling error, a most common occurance.

hope that elucidates the obfuscation!

Dearest of Rhino's

Colin is right. Bassline, altho it can't be found in a regular English dictionary, is a terminology used by musicians, that means a certain pattern of few bars that is performed by a bass.

There are many words that regard to professional terminology, in many different fields, that can't be found in dictionaries - that doesnt mean they don't exist, but that usually ppl wouldn't use those in normal life. There are many examples, please forgive me that I wont use those here.

Baseline on the other hand as rightfully said by Colin ( U have a good english man... hehehe ) means nothing and is really a common mistake when relating to basslines           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

karnaf-

to summarize: More often than not when someone writes "baseline", they really mean "bassline" because there are many non-native english-speaking here, and spelling isn't emphasized.

You can use "baseline" to refer to what you said but it would confuse alot of people- it's not a common musical term. I think "vibe" captures that meaning a bit clearer.

Oh and we forget that "bass line" also means that fishing line with the bass lure attached on the end. Let's not forget our underwater friends, especially as we near the pisces phase of the year.

Take it from us Americans and English.
Its 100% "BASSLINE".
BASSLINE, a line of notes using a bass sound.
Just lke a synthline is like a line of notes using a synth.
Baseline in english is like a standard point or format. They are both pronounced exactly the same.
