bass - the bass sound of the track.

baseline - an imaginary line on which the base of the track sits. The basic motive of the track on which everything else is built up.

bassline - no such word - best you can do is 'bass line' but what whould it refer to? the bass? then why add the line to the term???           Please REMOVE my cellphone number from any SMS spam list you may have. Thanks.

to get technical

1))) bass
adj : having or denoting a low vocal or instrumental range; "a
deep voice"; "a bass voice is lower than a baritone
voice"; "a bass clarinet" [syn: deep]
n 1: the lowest part of the musical range
2: the lowest part in polyphonic music [syn: bass part]
3: an adult male singer with the lowest voice [syn: basso]
4: the lean flesh of a saltwater fish of the family Serranidae
[syn: sea bass]
5: any of various North American freshwater fish with lean
flesh (especially of the genus Micropterus) [syn: freshwater
bass]
6: the lowest adult male singing voice [syn: bass voice, basso]
7: the member with the lowest range of a family of musical
instruments
8: nontechnical name for any of numerous edible marine and
freshwater spiny-finned fishes

2))) baseline
n 1: an imaginary line or standard by which things are measured
or compared; "the established a baseline for the budget"
2: the back line bounding each end of a tennis or handball
court; when serving the server must not step over this
line [syn: service line]
3: the lines a baseball player must follow while running the
bases

"bass line" isn't an existing english contraption of words... it doesn't exist... it's like the spoon in the matrix i'm afraid.

Rik's definitions cover it.

As far as "bass line", that's the thing that sounds exactly the same in every full on track you hear these days. usually has no balls. waste of bass bins.

If you want an educated native English-speaker's definition, the bass is the sound that plays the bassline.

'Base line' is a meaningless phrase when talking about music in the English language.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I have to disagree with you Colin.
You're saying that "the bass is the sound that plays the bassline." but how can you define a term (bass) with something that is not a word at all (bassline)??? Bass is exactly what Rik wrote up there. Bass part is the bass' part in the track.

Baseline is so meaningful in music, it's the basis of the track, the main theme of it. A bassline is a non-existing thing; this word does not exist.
