the cd is pure black... not bad..
I still think it sucks that the cover has nothing inside, no info, very small handwritting that says nothing...
I demand big labels to make better booklets.. come on, these simple covers do not do it anymore |

I agree 100%. Nowadays a cd needs a cool booklet, with coll stuff and informations. Stickers and another single cover for the copy. So labels please do something

now let me continue with my rage against one-page and simple cd covers which I hate so much:
Ott - Blumenkraft (this has already been said...Wtf, no info inside, no tracklist, no nothing, just very small writting of.. nothing really)
Ten Madison - Milk (wtf, blank cover with black writting, and NOTHING inside, just ´made by blabla, in blabla´ wtf? that totally totally sucks)
Sandspider - Music for an imaginary film (Man, I guess it´s a millenium records problem.. Im pissed with them for this.. Again nothing written anywhere, no tracklist, nothing.. Frontcover is this minimal red style, which would not be bad if there was a cool booklet.. but there isnt)
V.A. - Daytime (submachine recs) (the cover is pretty nice, but 1 page just fking sucks! At least they put the tracknames, but come on, just a couple more pages of a bit of explanation, pics, or whatever is necessary!! ok maybe you guys didnt have money, but if you did, shame on you..I dont guess 1 page extra would cost much, would it? )
maybe a few more but I forgot
so labels.. pay attention.. You HAVE to put a tracklist in the booklet.. Or do you think everybody that buys a cd carries the cd jewelcase around? Of course not, most of them carry in their cd case... Which means if the cover doesnt have a tracklist, how the f*ck can they know whats the name or duration or artists playing (in the case of a compilation) or whatever of the tracks?!?!?!?!
and no 1 page covers.. I already said.. That sucks.. We want at least 4 pages.. if you are a small label, then ok maybe you have some excuse of not making many page-booklet, but you still can make a very cool front cover art AND put the tracklist.. there´s no excuse for not putting that...
btw, for those using a jewel-case in their cds.. PLEASE on that circle where the hole of the cd fits in, you know? Well, it always breaks easily.. Some jewel cases comes with a little ´protection´ for that, if you know what Im talking about.. USE THAT!!
ok thats enough for now |

Sherlock, all what you're asking have a cost.. and many labels just can't afford it.. Ok maybe some of them could do it and don't..
But, on the other side, the graphic designers should also suggest cheaper solutions to the labels, like mono-chromatic or bi-chromatic covers that would already divide the costs in 2 or 3..
Psytrance is fond of a lot of colors, okay.. so CYMK is the standart..
But it is possible for some designers (the ones that CAN deliver good things without using Ultra Fractal) to suggest really brilliant bi-chromatic works, with the "tension" focused on the layout more than on the colours..
Labels should maybe think of it.. Instead of doing the job themselves or calling some cheap-but-lazy designers... with whom the print costs will still remain high..

kakoo, you are partly correct...
firstly there are some labels which are doing very well, big labels (such as twisted, in the case of Ott´s cover) and still dont do nice booklets..
There are some which don´t but nevertheless they can still put the track listing and make a nice front cover (which doesnt necessarily mean colourful one)
and also, how much would a nice cover booklet cost per cd? do you have a guess?
What about making custom covers.... (just throwing ideas here).. make 2 versions of the cd... one with kickass booklet costing 1 or 2 dollars extra (just as an example), and the simple 1-page cover for less....
I still am pretty sure that there are many solutions that labels could think of

Happened recently with the new Beastie Boys album (and WHAT an album).. There were both digipack and jewel-case formats suggested, with a little difference in the prices..
That was nice, did I think..
