not to Gil bash or anything but if he had been my first goa experiance, i dont think i would have ever listend to the music again....

but hearing psy trance played after a really annoying disco house set, really opened my ears and mind to the quality of the music and what is was capable of. More so i think than that old primadona ever could

This "cross pollination" deal doesn't sound too good to me......People come to a goa party for the Goa experience......They don't want to just come, and hear (in this case) Astral Projection and then some jungle music, or hard house or some crap like that! They want goa, Goa and more GOA....!!!

Real goa, before trance was introduced, included all kinds of music. Those full moon parties back in the day had everything from rock to industrial to new wave.

Quoted directly from Goa Gil:

"..I was djing any kind of music at that time, in the mid-seventies, but I still tried to use the music to make a story from first song to last song. In the end of the seventies some of the first "new wave" music with synths and drum machines, like Kraftwerk, started to filter in, but it was in the early eighties when it really started to happen with the new music, and then I went to the west and started to find more of the new sound.... groups like Front 242, Cabaret Voltaire, Tackhead, Yello, Portion Control, Chakk, Laser Cowboys,... But in those days we collected even from Hi NRG, future dance, also stuff like Depeche Mode, New Order, etc., anything that had some good synth & drum machine parts"

Funny how people tend to overlook this

Mr. NickTornetta,

This is the new Millenium, not the mid 70's!! Those days, Gil played anything electronic that he could get his hands on, cause electronic music was just beginning. These are not 'those days'! These are these days! Anyway, since your organizing the party, I guess there's no changing the lineup now!

Don't take a quote from Gil used in another context and try to apply it here buddy! He was talking about the scene 30 years ago. We've come a long way since then......

This may be the new millenium, but the spirit in which psytrance was born was a CROSS POLLINATION of multiple ideas, genres, and cultures. Has psychedelic trance mutated into a genre where everyone who listens to it is automatically spiritually evolved and those who don't are drugged out 16 year olds that wear bright colored bracelets? Have our heads gotten so far removed from actual reality that we feel that we are spiritually superior to others that do not share the same beliefs just because of the music we listen to?? (see where I am taking this? think about it for a second objectively)

The general negativity to any other dance music genre from the "purists" should have no effect on people that wish to remain open minded. Let these people throw the party, let b-boys & trancers unite...

Everyone swears that any party that has any other genre other than psytrance is going to be overrun by 16yr old kids on 15 pills and the lot. Don't get me wrong, I have seen that happen before many times... But I also have seen a whole bunch of 30+ year olds on 15 hits of acid running around acting like they are 12.... Doesn't mean it will happen all the time.

I have been to non-psy parties where not a single candy kid was in sight, and everyone was responsible and there was a great vibe. What makes vibe of the party just isn't solely the type of music that is played, but the people RESPONSIBLE for throwing the party and the way that the party is promoted.

I would be worried if I walked down downtown Seattle and saw a huge 3'x4' poster of the event in someplace like Starbucks or something like that. That just shows that the promoter is catering to the lowest common denominator and is just looking to fill the space and perhaps his pockets. Those are the parties that have the problems, (and psytrance parties do happen like that too)

So once again, I would honestly hope for the sake of the scene itself that us trancers don't consider ourselves "too enlightened" to support all dance music. It's fine to have favorites... hell, Psytrance has changed my life, but never forget where you came from. And if you came from Goa and listening to Gil, never forget where Goatrance came from...

When Astral last played SF, there gear was not plugged in. They danced around and mimed the whole thing, to what we later learned was a cd.
We found out cause the cd skipped in the middle of the set

i might get shit for this but anyway...
crossgenre party or maybe more proggy type party is the only place i think Astral belongs. Sure they were psychedelic back in the day, but times change, music changes! If i heard them played at a psyparty i would prob. laugh and groan. This borderline psy music is a perfect introduction for others into other kinds of psy music, its not too hard, not too cheese, etc. just right for getting people excited about psy.
nice job Nick, hope the party turns out great and that Astral plugs in the synth this time

oh my... John Bishop... The most well known DJ from San Diego's annoying Hard House scene. I have had the unfortunate luck to see him countless times, in this trance-less, hip hop - bad house club scene. HOpefully Astral Projection will blow the minds of the club kids and lead them to the light...           -xo Truffle Radio ox-

no cross genre parties for me..why? not because of elitism but because after hearing jungle house drum and bass and breaks and psytrance it was clear those other genres didnt move me literally i wasnt compelled to dance..so i dont want to hear a house set in the middle of grapes of wrath..on the same note i doubt anyone at a punk show would want to hear britney spears...its all about choice..

oh and i agree with meagan i dont really feel astral is really making psytrance anyway..

BOOM!~           freaks unite!!!!

What's sad is that people say they are not psy....very sad, because Mahadeva was the first "psy" song I could place a name to and it was oh so special in every way.........Astral was also my first live trance experience....and it too was oh so special....

were my standards less then? no.
Do I like house/progressive now? no.
Do I still like Astral......HELL YEAH!!!!

I think the problem is a lot of people place morning music in a different category than psy/dark psy? Just because it isn't dark doesn't mean it isn't Psy......Psychedelic mornings are also nice. And Astral is one of the oldest, coolest, and best acts to see live....I've enjoyed them everytime, even when I was at my "can't stand morning music" phase.....Astral has and always will be special to me....MAHADEVA, KABALAH, POWER GEN, love light and goa is what it is and has been all about......Everyone else is just unique in their own way....Astral was one of the first....           assumption is the mother of all fuckups.

cross genre party? only if its Xenomorph and Darkthrone

but come on, psychedelic is what you make of it. my washing machine is psychedelic. this forum is psychedelic. michael jackson is psychedelic. I thought we all understood that. and Astral will be psychedelic to those people seeing them for the first time at this party. whats the big deal.

personally I'd rather go to the Xenomorph/Darkthrone party
