Labels very rarely set the price to retail -usually that is the distributor

most retail suffers from problems related to maintaining inventory and paying their overheads - which is why we see such huge markups.

Question to distributors/labels: is there ANY chance that the price of single CD can be lowered?

I know that it's easy and trendy nowadays to blame piracy for low sales but no one offers cds for less. Big companies like Virgin or Tower Records decide to shut down stores instead.

Its evolution! It comes out cheaper faster and it opens the doors to a wide sea of possibilities.
For the collectors of the CD, you can always buy a good printer and print the CD layout and stuff, it’s a good long term investment.

re: Question to distributors/labels: is there ANY chance that the price of single CD can be lowered?

- the closer you buy to source, and the more units you buy, then the cheaper the price will be

once we sell on to a distributor or retail then price decisions are no longer ours to control, and are governed by the amount of mark-up they need/decide to make.

so - if you buy your cd's at a great indie music store, with knowledgable staff, then consider that a dollar or two of the price you pay is going towards keeping the shop in business [paying rent, running costs, salaries]

assume that every person who is in the distribution/retail chain will add between 30 and 50% to the price they paid - which is why a cd we sell for 7 $ can retail for around 20$

I know the numbers and that's why I'm asking questions

I don't believe that 100% markup added by distributors is absolute minimum allowing them to stay in bussiness.

Correct me if I'm wrong please.
